So this was a miss. Maybe I’m just not a fan of Starbucks caramel syrup? I was at Target so maybe they don’t have blonde espresso and used regular? I’ll try just a straight up aerocano at my regular Starbucks- my husband loves it and he’s a huge coffee snob so it probably is good lol. Who’s tried this? What are your thoughts?

Happy birthday to the heart and soul and biggest bad ass of JVF and this house!

You inspire each of us every day. I could not imagine being on this journey with anyone else.

Happy birthday!

You are going to have weeks where you absolutely crush it and weeks where life feels like it’s doing everything it can to throw you off course.

That’s part of the journey. I know everyone loves a “fresh start”, but honestly…how is that working for you? Maybe it works for a minute, until the next thing comes along that throws you off…and there’s always going to be something.

Sustainable progress isn’t about doing everything perfectly, staying motivated 24/7, or never having a setback. It’s about learning to ride the waves instead of jumping off the boat and swimming back to shore.

You don’t have to start over every time things get hard. You don’t have to wait for Monday, a new month, or for a fresh burst of motivation.

You just keep going. You adjust when you need to. You do what you can with what you have that day.

You are not starting over. You are continuing.

We’re coming up on one of the busiest social times of the year for many of us. With that comes a lot of temptations and potential obstacles to building the healthier lifestyle we keep telling ourselves we want.

Because of the perceived chaos ahead, many of us say “f**k it! I’ll start January 1st.” But this is counterproductive, and it puts you even further behind when the clock strikes midnight on January 1st and all our problems “magically” disappear.

Trust me, we’ve been there. Before we lost nearly 185 lbs, we would fall into this trap every year, sometimes to epic proportions. One year we decided to just eat carryout every night during the month of December. By the end, all we wanted was a home-cooked meal, but we didn’t back down. If only we had put that kind of commitment into eating healthy!

Look at it logically. If you treat November and December as the holiday season, you get 61 days of choices to set you on the right path for your health and fitness goals.

Let’s say you’re not ready to monitor what you eat or exercise on days you have a party or an actual holiday. Out of those 61 days, let’s count 4 actual holidays, plus another 3 party days.

That means for 7 out of 61 days, you CAN say f**k it! That still leaves you at roughly 88% consistency. Holy crap, that would be amazing. Think how far you would come toward reaching your goals in two months if you stayed 88% consistent.

Think of how much better you would feel overall rolling into the new year without having to reestablish habits you threw away over the past few months.

Give it a try. Over the next few days, look at your calendar for the rest of the year and see how many days you can commit to putting your health and fitness goals first. I think you’ll be surprised.

One of my biggest goals when I started losing weight wasn’t just to lose the weight.

It was to eventually be able to eat like a normal person.

And I don’t mean eating whatever I want, whenever I want, with zero regard for calories or nutrition.

Because here’s the truth: when you’re actively trying to lose fat, you’re eating in a calorie deficit. That means there are going to be choices. Portions matter. Sometimes you have to decide that something isn’t worth the calories today.

That’s not a bad thing. That’s what a fat-loss phase requires.

But I also didn’t want to spend the rest of my life dieting.

What helped me get there was getting out of the all-or-nothing mentality and learning some really boring but incredibly important foundational habits:

Protein at most meals.
Plenty of produce and fiber.
Reasonable portions.
Mostly nutrient-dense foods.
Regular movement.
Prioritizing sleep and stress management.
And learning that one indulgent meal doesn’t require a week of punishment.

Now, probably 80-90% of what I eat is pretty basic and pretty healthy.

But I can also go out to dinner. Have dessert. Eat the food I really want. Enjoy it. And move on.

No guilt. No “starting over Monday.” No compensating for it the next day.

That’s what I mean when I say I can finally eat like a normal person.

The goal isn’t to be perfect enough to maintain your weight.

The goal is to build a strong enough foundation that maintaining your weight doesn’t require you to live in a constant state of dieting.

Perimenopause and menopause can change some things.

Yep. S**t happens as we get older.

Recovery might look different. Your body might respond differently. Your hormones are changing. The strategies that worked in your 20s might not work the same way anymore, or even at all.

But different does NOT mean doomed.

You can still get strong.
You can still improve your fitness.
You can still maintain a healthy weight range.
You can still build muscle.
You can still run, lift, hike, play, travel, and do the things you love.

Maybe it looks a little different than it did 10, 20, or 30 years ago.

That’s okay.

Don’t let your age become the excuse that keeps you from pursuing the healthiest version of yourself.

You don’t need to be 25 again.

You just need to figure out what works for the body you have today.

There’s a difference between trying to lose weight and consistently doing the things that actually create weight loss.

You can be thinking about your nutrition all day. You can be frustrated with your progress. You can really want it badly. You can even “feel” like you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing.

And still not be consistently in a calorie deficit- which is a requirement for weight loss.

That doesn’t mean you’re lazy, unmotivated, or incapable of losing weight.

It means there’s probably a gap between what you intend to do and what you’re actually doing.

And that gap is where the work is.

Instead of beating yourself up, get curious. What keeps happening that you’re not accounting for? Weekends? Portions? Mindless snacking? Liquid calories? Starting over every Monday?

You don’t need more guilt. You need an honest look at your patterns.

Because “I’m trying” is a feeling.

Consistency is a behavior.

This is just the thing we work on in nutrition coaching: closing the gap between what you intend to do and what you’re actually doing, without restrictive diets or starting over every Monday.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and build an approach you can actually stick with, send us a message.

Breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated to be balanced.

Here’s what’s in my bowl and why I love it:

Greek yogurt: Protein to support muscle and keep you satisfied.

Catalina Crunch: More protein, plus some fiber and crunch.

Raspberries: Fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Chia seeds: Extra fiber, plant-based omega-3 fats, and a little protein.

Peanut butter: Healthy fats, a little protein, and a whole lot of joy.

My goal? Aim for around 30g of protein and 10g of fiber at breakfast. It’s a decent target for most people that helps you get a solid start on your daily needs. Of course everyone is different, but it’s a good general starting point.

Fueling yourself adequately in the morning can help manage hunger throughout the day, making you less likely to get cravings and feel ravenous by evening.

And no, you don’t need to cook an elaborate breakfast to make that happen.

Greek yogurt, protein shakes, cottage cheese, eggs (I like 1 whole egg + 2 servings of egg whites scrambled and hard boiled are super easy), high-protein cereal, and ready-to-drink protein shakes are all convenient protein options. Fruit (fresh, frozen, freeze dried, dried, canned- it all counts!), whole grain breads, oats, and high fiber ceramic are good fiber sources. Mix and match to get the protein and fiber you need. Sprinkle in a little healthy fat and you’re good to go.

I love this bowl because it takes minutes to make, can be prepped ahead, and is easy to weigh and adjust when I’m tracking.

Make it simple. Make it satisfying. Make it something you can actually stick with.

Share your favorite balanced breakfast!

Stop talking s**t about yourself. Seriously.

You’re not “bad at this.” You’re learning.
You’re not “failing.” You’re figuring out what works.
You don’t “suck.” You’re working on improving.

The way you talk to yourself matters. Your brain pays attention to the stories you tell yourself, and the more you reinforce a negative narrative, the easier it becomes to fall into that pattern.

That doesn’t mean you have to fake positivity or pretend everything is easy and amazing. It means learning to look at where you are currently at, and it’s not a reason to tear yourself down.

Instead of “I suck at this,” try “I’m working on getting better at this.”

Same situation. Different perspective. A whole lot more useful.

You can acknowledge where you want to improve without making it mean something negative about who you are.

You don’t have to tear yourself down to build yourself up!
