Your midwife is not your doula, but many women hire a midwife and expect her to be one.

This doesn't mean she won't hold your hand, encourage you through a contraction, help you find a more comfortable position, or remind you just how capable you are. She will do that many times throughout your labor.

But her primary responsibility is to monitor your well-being and your baby's, assess how labor is progressing, recognize complications, and make clinical decisions when needed.

And that is a BIG responsibility that requires her full attention. Even the most attentive, loving midwife cannot be in two places at once or give uninterrupted hands-on support while simultaneously attending to every clinical responsibility.

Your doula has a different role. She's there to offer continuous support throughout labor. She can help you navigate the intensity, suggest comfort measures, offer reassurance, support your partner, and help you feel informed, heard, and cared for.

Our roles are complementary, not interchangeable.

If you have considered hiring a doula but haven't, consider this your sign.

Did you know that in many countries it's standard to only see a midwife for expected pregnancy progression? This is not the norm in the US.

Midwives are seen as primary care with Obstetricians being a "specialist" for needing advanced care. And while one might assume everyone seeing a specialist = improved outcomes, we see the exact opposite.

Consider this, what if EVERY sore throat was referred to an ENT? A primary provider gets to know their patients and can manage basic allergies, mild reflux, and even strep infections. Imagine the long wait for care for a brief appt with a specialist who doesn't know you and is overbooked able to provide just a few minutes?

In their training, stronger antibiotics and surgery solves problems. Because they're trained for chronic infections, antibiotic resistant infections, swollen tonsils obstructing airway, etc. If they have less time, and an uncomfortable patient, might they be more inclined to offer a higher level of treatment? This isn't malicious, it's their training and time with patient.

And for the patients truly needing a higher level of care, this is perfect! But what if most people with a sore throat just need honey, time, and maybe an antibiotic if strep test is positive?

Think of similar approach to birth. Why are expected risk patients seeing a trained interventionist and trained surgeon? Their skillset absolutely saves lives, but is it necessary for all?

And for those who ARE higher risk, should they miss out on the benefits of midwifery care? The whole person approach including lifestyle, diet, mental health?

Fun fact: I experienced three high risk pregnancies and births (after low risk ones), and I maintained my midwifery care while getting collaborative care from OB and MFM.

👇🏽 Do you think this change in care could benefit US maternal health outcomes?

Is it always good to know things, just because we can? Dr Sara Wickham explores this idea in an article about the consequences of knowledge.

There’s something pretty special about caring for the tiniest members of the family. 🤍

Pediatric chiropractic care is gentle, specific, and completely individualized.

When I work with babies, I use very gentle, controlled pressure and age-appropriate techniques… no twisting, cracking, or forceful manipulation.

Parents may bring their little ones in for support with:

• Tension or muscular tightness
• Head-turning preferences
• Torticollis or positional preferences
• Feeding-related musculoskeletal concerns
• Comfortable movement and positioning as baby grows

Every baby is different, so I take the time to observe how they move, how they respond to touch, and what their parents are noticing at home.

Most importantly, baby’s and parents comfort comes first. 🤍

At Davenport Family Chiropractic, I believe even our tiniest patients deserve to feel heard, cared for, and completely comfortable.

Because they may be little… but they deserve BIG care ✨
