Yes, this is real.
In February 2026 Florida officials announced that the state Department of Health had tested 8 popular sandwich breads for glyphosate, the active ingredient in many w**d killers. Six of the eight came back positive.
The results, in parts per billion:
Sara Lee Honey Wheat: 191
Nature's Own Butter Bread: 190
Wonder Bread Classic White: 173
Nature's Own Perfectly Crafted White: 132
Dave's Killer Bread White Done Right: 12
Dave's Killer Bread 21 Whole Grain: 10
Sara Lee Artesano White: none detected
Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White: none detected
Glyphosate is the most widely used w**d killer in United States crop farming. It is sprayed on wheat fields, and some farmers also spray it on wheat shortly before harvest to speed up ripening. That is how it can end up in a loaf of bread even though no bakery adds it.
The World Health Organization's cancer research agency, IARC, classified glyphosate in 2015 as "probably carcinogenic to humans." The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency disagrees and says glyphosate is "not likely to be carcinogenic to humans."
To be fair: every result was far below the amount the EPA allows on wheat grain, which is 30 parts per million, or 30,000 parts per billion. The highest bread tested was more than 150 times below that. There is no separate EPA number for finished bread. Bimbo Bakeries, which makes Sara Lee, said glyphosate "is a commonly used herbicide in agriculture and not added during the baking of Sara Lee bread." A bread industry group, the American Bakers Association, said bread products remain safe. Flowers Foods, which makes Nature's Own, Wonder and Dave's Killer Bread, and Pepperidge Farm did not respond to news outlets' requests for comment at the time. The state did not name the lab that ran the tests or say how many samples of each bread were tested, and PolitiFact reported the state did not cite a study showing harm at these levels. A toxicologist quoted by PolitiFact said these are "not particularly high or dangerous levels of glyphosate."
What the test does show is which loaves had the w**d killer in them and which did not. If you would rather not have it in your bread, the two that tested clean were Sara Lee Artesano and Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse.
