Magnum is demonstrating the power of a good chew!

For growing children, age-appropriate foods that require chewing help develop jaw, muscle strength, coordination, and oral motor skills. Chewing is an important piece of healthy, oral function, and facial development.

Meanwhile , Magnum is here doing his workout and brushing his teeth.. multitasking at its finest!

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to provide functional evaluations for patients at Karande Biological Dentistry - Virginia

It was a great opportunity to bring another perspective to patient care and look at the connection between oral function, breathing, and overall health.

Your face can change when your function changes.

You may not be able to change your bone structure—but you *can* work on the muscles, tongue posture, and oral function that influence how you breathe, swallow, and carry yourself.

With consistent retraining, meaningful changes can happen over time. The key? Function first.

The little guy is always up for working on myo with his Tia. Since he’s learned to “wink” he decided to give me the full show. I think he may have used every one of his cute face muscles! 🥰

Swallowing difficulties can have more than one cause, but oral function and tongue control can play an important role.

Myofunctional therapy focuses on retraining the muscles involved in breathing, chewing, and swallowing through targeted exercises and consistent practice.

If your child struggles with chewing, swallowing, or tongue control, don’t ignore the signs. Save this post and share it with a parent who needs to see it.

What if working on the underlying function could be part of the solution, not just managing the symptoms?

Myofunctional therapy focuses on the way the tongue, lips, jaw, and breathing muscles work together. The goal is to improve function and address contributing patterns that may be affecting breathing, sleep, and oral health.

And when you’re comparing the cost of different interventions, it’s worth asking: "Are we only treating the symptom, or are we also addressing the function behind it?"
