Air quality index is in the purple range today! That is extremely dangerous for those with respiratory disorders such as asthma, very young, and also the older population. In the purple range, the air quality will also affect even the healthy members of the population to some extent. Stay indoors if at all possible and all of those masks and face coverings we have for COVID will come in handy today.

To add to the hazy mix in the air, the grass pollen continues towards the peak and the pesky tree pollen doesn't seem to want to go away.

A change in wind direction and hopefully some needed rain will help to cleanse the air.

Warm and sunny with a slight breeze. Sounds like a great day to be outside to enjoy the weather. For seasonal allergy sufferers though, that combination in the middle of April is the perfect scenario for the trees to release a lot of pollen. Traditionally, the peak for tree pollen season is in a couple of weeks. The daily coating of fine pollen on our cars and other outdoor surfaces will gradually increase if the weather pattern stays the same. This year's tree pollen season started early but it does not mean it will end early.
If you suffer from allergies take your medications, limit your time outdoors, use air conditioning, keep windows closed, change clothes, shower when you get back home, and/or consider evaluation and treatment by a board-certified allergist!

The cherry blossoms on the Tidal Basin are predicted to be in peak bloom later this week. Our tree pollen season, though, is still in the early stages. The tree pollen season started early due to a very mild Winter. However, we will not see the peak of the tree pollen season until the end of April/early May time frame.

Oral antihistamines help with the itchy symptoms, but they should be used in conjunction with intranasal corticosteroids which help with the congestion symptoms. Antihistamine eye drops can be added for itchy, watery eyes.

A lot of times though, the medications do not fully relieve your symptoms. That's when your friendly neighborhood allergist comes in. We can help to find out which allergens/pollens are causing your symptoms and tailor an immunotherapy or "allergy shot" program to reduce your sensitivity to those allergens. Over time, your sensitivity/allergy will be reduced and since you will have no or minimal symptoms, likely will not need to take medications or can significantly reduce the need for medications. Call the clinic at (571) 246-6323 to make an appointment or visit us at www.ashburnallergy.com

Despite what the groundhog saw, Spring is on the horizon. The early pollinating trees have already started to release pollen. Traditionally, tree pollen season starts to rev up in the first couple of weeks of March with the peak being towards the end of April or the beginning of May.

For those of us with Spring seasonal allergies, now is the time to prepare. Long-acting, second-generation antihistamines such as Allegra, Zyrtec, Claritin, or Xyzal help with the itchy symptoms. They start to work within an hour of taking the medications. For nasal and sinus stuffiness, runny nose, throat clearing, and dripping down the back of the throat; nasal steroid sprays are the most effective for those symptoms and can be used with antihistamine pills. Nasal steroid sprays are most effective if used on a regular basis. They are safe to use and do not cause significant steroid side effects even with longer use. In fact, they are intended to be used daily during the season and typically take several days of using before becoming effective. They are not intended for as-needed use.

If you need further guidance on the use of the medications, want to know which environmental allergens are causing symptoms, and want to discuss other treatment options; then make an appointment with your friendly neighborhood allergist. We can test you to see which allergens are likely causing your symptoms, medications to use for the variety of symptoms, modifications that can be made in the home, and different treatment options including allergy shots. Immunotherapy or allergy shots are the best treatment option to help reduce or eliminate allergic symptoms by helping your immune system recognize and ignore environmental triggers.

Make an appointment now before tree pollen season ramps up and there is a rush of patients coming during the season as their symptoms are now out of control.

We are in the midst of the flu and cold season. This year's influenza season started early and has led to missed school and work. RSV has made a significant rebound this Fall, affecting our younger patients. All this with COVID still a major influence on our daily lives. Patients with asthma and other respiratory ailments need to take extra precautions this Fall and Winter. Make sure to get your yearly influenza vaccine, boost up the COVID protection if indicated, and make sure to check your asthma medications. Follow up with your friendly neighborhood allergist for current assessment, refill or start medications, and develop an action plan for the rest of the season. www.ashburnallergy.com
