There’s a phase of wildfire season nobody talks about 🔥
Not the days when the smoke rolls in. The weeks after…when the air has cleared.
Elecampane (Inula helenium) is the root for that phase. Warming, drying, stimulating. It goes after thick, stuck mucus, that won’t move on its own 🌿
This is different work than mullein does (check a few videos back on my mullein share). Mullein moistens dry, irritated tissue in the middle of active smoke exposure. Elecampane is for after. For the congestion that lingers once the smoke has cleared. A cough that’s productive but not going anywhere, the lungs still recovering from a respiratory infection.
⚠️One note. This root is drying. If your cough is dry and tight, this isn’t the plant for it. Save it for when there’s real mucus that needs moving.
The root is dug in the fall of its third year, once it’s grown fully into itself. Ready right as fire season winds down and the slow work of rebuilding begins 🍂
