Insulin is a hormone produced by your pancreas that helps regulate how your body uses and stores energy.
After you eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which enters your bloodstream. Insulin signals tissues- especially muscle and fat to take up glucose and helps regulate how the body stores and uses nutrients.
But here's where it gets interesting: insulin also influences how your body handles fat, supports protein metabolism, and helps maintain a stable internal environment.
So what happens when your body becomes less responsive to insulin?
This is called insulin resistance.
Your cells don't respond to insulin as effectively, so your pancreas may need to produce more insulin to help maintain blood glucose levels.
Over time, insulin resistance can contribute to elevated blood sugar and increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is also associated with other metabolic health concerns.
And here's something important: insulin resistance can develop before blood sugar levels reach the range used to diagnose diabetes.
That doesn't mean every energy crash or craving is a sign of insulin resistance. These symptoms can have many different causes.
Instead, it's a reminder that metabolic health is about more than one blood sugar reading.
Nutrition, physical activity, sleep, genetics, medications, and other factors can all influence how your body regulates glucose.
At MotherRoot, we believe understanding the bigger picture helps us ask better questions about your health.
Because insulin isn't just about diabetes. It's part of how your body manages energy every single day.💛
