This is very saddening, and preventable. Oftentimes we like to clump presentations into one singular group, "picky eating is sensory which is autism" is a common one.

This mother should not have had to reach out for seven years, imagine if this child did not have his mother as such a strong advocate. Please, use your community resources. Seek second opinions if your intuition is off from the recommendation. Request scripts for related services. We (OT, PT, ST, ABA) are here to help.

As a mother of a child with ARFID, this hits home. Had I not requested for other services we would not have found out as early as we did. There are resources out there, we need to get them into more hands. Never count out related services as a helping hand. 💔

My ARFID Life has been a great resource to share with friends and family. If you know a picky eater or someone with ARFID, check them out!

Every one of our body systems relies on vestibular input. At our home we use a high-top table which inhibits our children's feet from touching the floor. This resulted in 'W'-sitting and core instability which impacted my son's ability to eat (he is diagnosed with ARFID). Let me show you a low tech assistive technology tool we are trying at our house.

We tried the Keekaroo children's chair to establish the 90-90-90 rule. What is the rule? 90* bend at the hips, 90* bend at the knees, 90* bend at the ankles. This ensures your feet make contact with the floor (targeting vestibular stability to help the body understand where it is in space).

The nice thing we like about the chair is the lateral supports. The slight curve gives lateral support now that his 'W' sitting isn't his primary point of stability.

The kicker?!? The chair grows as he ages, with the footplate moving up/down with changes in height.

So far we have noticed much less wiggling and core instability while eating, and slightly more attentiveness to that he is eating, requiring reduce promptings. We will keep an eye for longer term impacts, but so far this chair is a fan favorite!

You can always try this positioning with boxes, cushioning, pool noodles, pillows, etc. There is more than one way to get this optimal positioning.

We try ONE THING AT A TIME, that way we can ensure what works. Best way to do it imo!

Halloween is a big sensory event!

Costumes, doorbells, crowds, and candy can feel exciting for some children and overwhelming for others.

A few ideas for a more inclusive night:
1) Some families use a blue bucket to signal that a child may need extra time or may not say “trick or treat.” It’s a grassroots custom, so be patient and kind to every trick-or-treater.
2) The Teal Pumpkin Project, from FARE, encourages non-food treats for kids with food allergies.
3) Try costumes on ahead of time and plan quiet breaks.

Every child is different. If Halloween routines feel hard for your family, an OT evaluation can help figure out supports that fit. DM us with questions!

Please check out our nonprofit, The MCC Foundation for Neurodiversity & Inclusion. The nonprofit is being finalized and is in the bank-finalization stage. We currently have in-kind donations through a Amazon wish list that would benefit children within the MCC Therapies, LLC clinic in addition to during community events. Please see what we have to offer and how we can work together to build a truly inclusive community, together.
