❓ Has what I need help with actually changed?
❓ Which tasks am I now avoiding rather than doing slowly?
❓ Who do I tell first — my aide, or my VA social worker?
❓ Will this need a new assessment?
❓ How long does a change take to take effect?
❓ What happens to my schedule in the meantime?

Question two is the one people miss in themselves. Avoiding a task isn't managing it.

The entire VA home care process is six steps. About 2 to 5 weeks for most Veterans.

1️⃣ Establish VA Primary Care (1–7 days)
2️⃣ Request a Referral — ask for a "Home Care / Homemaker Services Referral" (same day–3 days)
3️⃣ VA Assessment Call (within 72 hours)
4️⃣ Complete the Questionnaire — your answers set your hours
5️⃣ Choose Your Provider — you can request an agency by name
6️⃣ Start Your Services (3–7 days)

Two steps are decisions you make. Two are conversations. The rest happens on VA's side.

Isolation is a health issue — and VA built it into who this program serves.

VA Homemaker and Home Health Aide services are for Veterans who need help with daily activities, who are isolated, or whose caregiver is experiencing burden.

That middle one gets left out of assessment calls constantly.

These are hands-on services — bathing, dressing, meals, mobility, medication reminders, housekeeping. But a Veteran who goes four days without speaking to anyone isn't outside the program's description. He's inside it.

"Is there a waitlist for VA home care?" Not a queue — a sequence.

There's no list you join. There are stages:

→ P*P appointment — 1–7 days
→ Referral processing — same day to 3 days
→ VA assessment call — within 72 hours
→ Service start after approval — 3–7 days

Availability varies by VA facility, so ask your VA social worker about timing at yours.

What people call a waitlist is usually the gap between stages, with nobody saying which stage you're in.

The uniform came off decades ago. The habit underneath it didn't.

There are Veterans in every neighborhood still fixing things. Still watching the house across the street. Still the first call when something goes wrong at 11pm.

Nobody files that under service anymore. It is, though — just the version without a ceremony.

A man who can't manage the shower safely can still true a wheel and still know which neighbor needs checking on. Help with bathing, meals and getting around isn't the end of that. It's what keeps it going.

Still here. Still useful. Still home.
