In honor of the ANCC Magnet and Pathway to Excellence Conference and with midterm elections approaching, I’m sharing a gem from last year’s conversation with Dr. Jennifer Mensik on the power of nurses, policy, and advocacy! October 2025
One of the highlights of the conference was the honor of interviewing Dr. Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, President of the American Nurses Association. Dr. Mensik Kennedy is a true force in nursing leadership — boldly advocating for policies that protect and empower nurses, from workforce well-being to national health policy and legislative impact.

Our conversation touched on what it means to lead with purpose, to influence change at the systems level, and to prepare the next generation of nurses to step into leadership with confidence and courage.

Being in a room filled with nurses who are driving transformation in practice, education, and leadership reminded me why our voices matter — and why our collective advocacy continues to shape the future of healthcare.

Here’s to every nurse leading with heart, vision, and impact. 💙

Scope of practice isn’t just a debate for professional organizations, legislators, or nursing boards.

It can influence who provides care, what services patients can access, and how healthcare teams function.

And that makes it a nursing issue.

Scope-of-practice laws and regulations help define the legal boundaries of professional practice. They vary by state and profession, and they can affect the responsibilities nurses are authorized to perform.

These decisions matter.

Consider what happens when a community has limited access to healthcare providers.

Could changes to professional practice laws improve access?

What education and competencies are necessary to support safe care?

How should responsibilities be distributed across healthcare teams?

What safeguards are needed to protect patients?

These are important questions—and they deserve evidence-based conversations.

Scope-of-practice discussions can become contentious because professional identity, patient safety, autonomy, and access to care are all involved.

But nurses cannot effectively participate in these conversations if we don’t understand the legislation being discussed.

You don’t have to support every proposed change. You do need to understand what the change actually does.

Read the bill.

Understand the existing law.

Examine the evidence.

Consider who benefits, who may be affected, and what safeguards are necessary.

Then decide where you stand.

Because when scope-of-practice legislation changes, its effects can extend far beyond the language written on a page.

They can reach the clinic, the hospital, the community, and the patient waiting for care.

💭 Reflect: Do you know how your state’s scope-of-practice laws affect your role and your patients’ access to care?
