Sunil Wagh is a full-time employee of Meher Free Dispensary. Sunil and his wife live behind the Dispensary. He is the watchman.

Sunil and Jyoti have three children. Their two boys are named Pravin and Prem. Pari is their daughter. Pravin and Pari were both born deaf at birth.

Pari, the youngest child, is 4 ½ years old. A relative gave them information about free surgery under a government program at David Sassoon Hospital in Poona. Sunil completed all the necessary paperwork. The doctor confirmed that due to her young age, Pari would be eligible for the free operation. After all the lab tests, the doctor performed a successful operation at Sassoon Hospital on Pari’s ear. The doctor told Sunil that Pari should be given speech therapy at least three times a week for two years, so she can speak normally after that time.

We are fortunate to have an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor at Meher Free Dispensary. The dispensary continues to provide free healthcare services during the ongoing pandemic.

Narayan Govind Khandke, a 73 year-old resident of Pimpalgaon Malvi, lives with his son Navnath and his wife Indubai. He and his family do not have any business or any farming for their income. His entire family is totally dependent on daily wages. Narayan used to work as a laborer until the age of 65 to support his family, but now he is unable to work due to old age. It so happened that five years ago, when he went to the mountains to fetch fodder for his domesticated goats, his legs slipped and he sustained a fracture in one of his legs. Now, his son, Navnath, who has completed Class 12th education, is working as a laborer in a private company to take care of his mother and father.

Narayan Khandke has worked hard for many years. He underwent surgery on both of his knees five years ago. Now, he uses a wooden stick to walk. He has been coming to the Meher Free Dispensary every month since the doctors told him to take certain medicines regularly after both of his knees were operated on.

Just last week, his blood sugar had risen. He had to be admitted to the private hospital, but now he is in good health. Narayan said that the Meher Free Dispensary is a great support for the poor patients as it provides medicines, lab facilities as well as some outside tests like X-rays and other tests for free.

August 3rd was Goher Irani’s birthday. She was born in 1916 in India, and spent her entire adult life serving her Master and Beloved, Meher Baba. She would serve as Meher Baba’s primary personal physician, and try to help Him in any possible way she could.

Below is a picture from an office at the Meher Free Dispensary that honors the founder and care giver to local farmers and villagers. Her presence remains very much felt today at the Meher Free Dispensary, which continues to help the poor and sick in this rural region of western India. Dr. Goher’s compassionate service is loved and remembered. Happy Birthday Dr. Goher!!!! Jai Baba!

The Meher Free Dispensary was founded by Dr. Goher Irani, who served for many years as a personal physician to her spiritual master Meher Baba. The dispensary started in 1970 in a single room in response to the health needs of local villagers and farmers. After 8 years, a separate Clinic building was built.

Prior to her passing on June 30th 2004, Dr. Goher attended the ground-breaking of the present 7,350 square foot facility opened to accommodate the increasing number of patients.

As it has for decades, Meher Free Dispensary serves poor families who would otherwise have no access to quality health care. About 35,000 patients were seen last year! In addition to five family doctors, there is a full-time pediatrician and OB/GYN. This year an ENT doctor was added one day a week.

And it’s all free—thanks in part to the generous donations received by Meher Fund.

Shabbir Khudabaksha Shaikh is a 75-year-old man who lives with his wife, Noorjahan, in the village of Deolali Pravara, about 55 km (34 miles) north of the Meher Free Dispensary (MFD). Shabbir has five married daughters. Four of the daughters are nurses working in hospitals; one daughter, named Mumtaj, stays at home and also cares for her parents.

Shabbir has a small grain mill. Noorjahan works at home running one of the machines associated with the mill, earning extra money for her family. Ten years ago Shabbir was working in a movie theatre as the manager; since that time all the village people have called him by the name of "Manager," even after he resigned that job.

Shabbir first visited MFD for knee pain and long-standing high blood pressure. Although his blood pressure was brought under control, he had a stroke after a few months, that resulted in right-sided paralysis. He had to resign from his job at the time and, since then, has had no any other income sources other than the grain mill. His daughter Mumtaj brings him to MFD for every clinic visit, where he also receives his medicine (all without charge). The normal practice at MFD is to prescribe a month's worth of medicines (in order to ensure adequate the follow-up of patients). However, the doctor makes an exception with Shabbir, given the difficulty of travel for him, and prescribes two months’ medicines at each visit. Mumtaj said that her father is dependent on MFD, its doctors and staff, and treatment. Otherwise he would never be able to afford to be properly treated.
