Infectious Diseases Society of America
Honors 199 Distinguished Clinicians, Scientists

Dr. Hudson Garrett Jr. of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville School of Medicine has been named a Fellow by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the nation’s leading infectious diseases professional society. Fellowship in IDSA is one of the highest honors in the field of infectious diseases. It recognizes distinguished clinicians and scientists from the United States and around the world who have achieved professional excellence and provided significant service to the profession.

Dr. Hudson Garrett is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and has dedicated his professional career towards reducing the incidence of Healthcare-Associated Infections and the advancement of evidence-based practices in infection prevention and control globally. Dr. Garrett is also a Fellow in the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

“The 199 individuals chosen to receive the FIDSA designation this year are committed to blazing trails in the field of infectious diseases, and IDSA is proud to honor them,” said Dan McQuillen, MD, FIDSA, president of IDSA. “There has never been a more critical or more exciting time for the field of infectious diseases. These ID physicians and scientists are on the front lines of research and clinical care and represent the passion and commitment to educate and protect us from dangerous illness. We all benefit as a result of their vital contributions to local communities and expertise within the field of medicine. I am proud to call them my colleagues.”

Applicants for IDSA Fellowship must be nominated by their peers and meet specified criteria that include continuing identification with the field of infectious diseases, national or regional recognition and publication of their scholarly work. Nominees are reviewed and elected by the IDSA Board of Directors. Fellows of IDSA work in many different settings, including clinical practice, teaching, research, public health and health care administration.

A new CDC report details a COVID-19 outbreak in two Hawaii gyms, with 21 cases linked to a fitness instructor who taught classes before showing symptoms. At the time of this outbreak, gyms did not require masks. To reduce the spread of COVID-19 in gyms, wear a well-fitting mask, even during high-intensity exercise, and stay at least 6 feet apart from others. Exercising outdoors or virtually could further reduce your risk of getting COVID-19. Learn more: bit.ly/MMWR22421.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Jan. 10, 2021

DPH Launches COVID Vaccine Locator
Ahead Of Phase 1A+ of Vaccine Administration

Atlanta – The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is launching a COVID vaccine locator on the DPH website at https://dph.georgia.gov. The tool allows users to search by county for a vaccine provider in their community, and provides location and contact information for the provider. This is not a centralized scheduling tool.

County health departments and private providers are included in the locator. Additional locations statewide will be added when providers are ready to safely administer vaccine, and as vaccine supply allows. All health departments and most other providers require appointments for vaccine administration. Because vaccine supply is limited, providers may not have immediate appointments available.

Effective tomorrow, Jan. 11, Georgia will be in phase 1A+ of vaccine administration. That phase includes: healthcare workers (physicians, nurses, EMS personnel, laboratory technicians, environmental services, etc.); residents and staff of long-term care facilities; adults aged 65+ and their caregivers, as applicable; and law enforcement, firefighters, 9-1-1 dispatchers and first responders.

The process of administering COVID-19 vaccine is more complicated than other common vaccines, such as flu vaccine, and requires providers to have more resources available, including an area where individuals can be monitored for 15 minutes after being vaccinated. Many providers with vaccine are still vaccinating their own staffs and patients and are not open to the public for vaccination yet.

As both Pfizer and Moderna are able to ramp up production of vaccine in the coming weeks, supply should better meet demand for each phase of allocation and administration. Until that time, providers and the public are urged to be patient as we work together to get vaccine distributed in the most efficient and equitable way possible.

All Georgians, including those who are vaccinated, are urged to continue to follow basic COVID-19 prevention measures: wear a mask, practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently and follow the guidance of Public Health and the guidelines in the Governor’s Executive Order.

For updates on COVID-19, follow @GaDPH and @GovKemp on Twitter and @GaDPH and @GovKemp on Facebook.

A new version of the virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected by United Kingdom (UK) officials. CDC is monitoring the situation in the UK. CDC and state & local health departments are continually monitoring and studying the virus spreading in the United States to quickly detect any changes.

Many viruses constantly change through mutation, and new versions of a virus are expected to occur over time.

More studies on this new version are needed to understand:
• How widely this version has spread
• How this version differs from other versions spreading in the UK and potentially around the world
• How the disease caused by this version differs from the disease caused by other versions that are currently circulating

CDC will provide updates as new information becomes available: https://bit.ly/3riUJ8B.

Today, is World Patient Safety Day! The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the huge challenges and risks health workers are facing globally including healthcare-associated infections, violence, stigma, psychological and emotional disturbances, illness and even death. Furthermore, working in stressful environments makes health workers more prone to errors which can lead to patient harm. Recognizing patient safety as a global health priority, all 194 WHO Member States at the 72nd World Health Assembly, in May 2019, endorsed the establishment of World Patient Safety Day (Resolution WHA72.6), to be marked annually on 17 September. The objectives of World Patient Safety Day are to increase public awareness and engagement, enhance global understanding, and spur global solidarity and action to promote patient safety.
