To all my dads in therapy, and especially those on my therapy couch, you are seen, loved, and appreciated. You are doing the hard work of being vulnerable and dealing with all the BS from your past. You are trying to be a better father than your father ever was to you. We know how hard it is to break generational cycles of violence, neglect, trauma, and absence. The emptiness and the void are examples of what not to be but often leave you wondering how you should be. This is exactly what we are working on! So that you can show up for your family and children not only as provider and protector but also as an emotional safe heaven and their soft place to land ❤️
You deserve all the celebration today!

Some thoughts on teaching toddlers how to use the toilet.
1- This milestone supports children’s sense of autonomy and independence, the foundation for the development of healthy self-esteem. I did it mom!!!!
2- The method used in this book is 100% behavioral which is effective but I prefer to insert some validation of feelings to the potty learning process.
3- Not a huge fan of sugary treats to reward behavior but I can’t argue their effectiveness. I prefer the RELIEF from natural and this case, UNCOMFORTABLE consequences and tons of parental positive attention as rewards.
4- Be flexible with the timeline. A long weekend is a good head start but realistically you need a minimum of 10 solid days of consistency and still expect accidents after that.
You can do it mamis!!!!!

If you book between 8 AM and 9 AM there’s a high chance I’ll be sipping on an iced latte while you sob your life away LoL 🤣 Just know that you can bring your own cup and we’ll have coffee together. There’s nothing like drinking salty tears with caffeine first thing in the morning 😭😂 Nahhh… but seriously… psychotherapy is not all doom and gloom. We have the biggest laughs and the darkest sense of humor!!! What are you waiting for?

When setting the agenda for my appointments I always ask, is there something top of mind that you want to make sure we address today? Even though we follow treatment plans aligned with overarching therapy goals, we always want to be flexible, go with the flow, and prioritize what our clients need to talk about. It is an art to connect the weekly happenings with the treatment goals… It is our job to hear the theme and find the common thread.

A very personal journal entry on father’s day. I often journal as if I were talking to my daughter. It helps clear my mind and process all kinds of parenting feelings. I’m sharing for those who can relate, and in honor of the dads that are trying to do it differently, the cycle breakers. We see you. We love you❤️

My dear baby,

Join me in congratulating your dad on this father’s day. I would love to be cute and post a short and sweet “happy father’s day,” but I prefer to be candid and give you a realistic and complex view of your dad, in the hopes that someday, you’ll read this journal entry and learn to appreciate the complexity of our human nature, the duality of manhood and fatherhood, and the paradoxes and challenges of our life’s roles.

Your dad is a brand new dad, who is also a good and imperfect man. Someone with flaws and virtues, with awesome days and worse nights. A loving father who is both a provider and a nurturer, both a mental health expert and a stressed out man. Someone who was raised by anger and irritability and is presently calm. I see him trying to break the generational cycle every day he holds you with tenderness, feeds you, puts you in a clean diaper, makes you giggle with silly faces, tickles your toes, and tries to prevent his heart from melting every time you call him “dadda”. He is doing it without role models. He is doing it out of pure instinct and love for you. He is your father and he is a human.

In his words, “you’ve made him soft,” in mine, you’ve made him vulnerable. Vulnerable to the fear of loss, vulnerable to toddler tantrums, vulnerable to worries about health, and to existential angst. But above all, irresistibly vulnerable to the sweetness of your eyes, the fondness of your gaze, and the brightness of your loud laughter that could light up the entirety of Times Square in a blackout.

So say it with me, happy father’s day to your one and only, your loving human, cycle breaker, “dadda.”
