Fall brings a lineup of look-alike illnesses, and each one calls for a different response. 🤧
Cold: Gradual congestion, cough and sore throat, maybe a low fever. Runs its course in about a week.
Flu: Sudden onset, higher fever, body aches and exhaustion. Hits harder and faster than a cold.
RSV: Starts cold-like, then a wet cough and wheezing. In babies under 1, watch breathing and feeding closely, as it can turn serious.
Croup: A barking, seal-like cough and hoarse voice, usually worse at night.
Call us regardless of which it is if you see: Fast or labored breathing, ribs pulling in with each breath, a fever in an infant under 2 months, dehydration, a baby too breathless to feed, or symptoms that suddenly worsen.
Most of these are managed at home with fluids, rest and time. It is the breathing that decides urgency.
At Valcourt Pediatric Associates, we help you tell them apart and know when it is time to be seen.
Watch the breathing. That's your signal. 💨
