Is Your Gut Making You Insulin Resistant?

Most people think insulin resistance comes from eating too much sugar or not exercising enough.
But for many people, it starts in the gut.

Here’s why:

→ A disrupted gut microbiome (dysbiosis) allows inflammatory compounds like LPS (lipopolysaccharide) to leak into your bloodstream
→ This creates a low-grade, chronic inflammation that blocks insulin receptors
→ Over time, it builds into metabolic resistance, where your body is working against your own efforts

You may notice:
✔ Blood sugar numbers creeping up
✔ Belly fat that won’t respond to diet
✔ Fatigue, brain fog, or cravings after meals
✔ A feeling that your body is “stuck in stress mode”

And here's what most protocols miss: you can eat perfectly and still struggle with blood sugar control if your gut is inflamed.

This is why we assess gut health as part of metabolic optimization. Then we address it strategically. Not with generic probiotics, but with targeted interventions that restore balance, repair the gut lining, and reduce the inflammatory load driving insulin resistance.

☑️ If your diet is dialed in but your glucose isn’t, your gut might be the missing piece. Link in bio to book your personalized consult.

Vitamin D3, K2 and A: What They Do and How They Work Together- a Good Refresher

1. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)-the calcium regulator, is produced in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight and can also be obtained from foods and supplements such as fatty fish.
Vitamins D3, K2 and A are important fat-soluble vitamins that support numerous critical functions in the body, including bone density, immunity, vision and the maintenance of healthy tissues. Each vitamin has its own role, but they also work together to help the body use nutrients effectively and maintain a healthy balance.
Vitamin D3 Bio-actively helps:
Make Strong Bones and Teeth: Helps the body absorb calcium from food.
Immune function: Supports the normal functioning of immune cells.
Muscle function: Helps maintain normal muscle strength and performance.
Calcium balance: Helps regulate calcium levels in the blood.
Cell function: Plays a role in cell growth and normal cellular processes.
Hormone Function: Interacts with the endocrine system and helps to regulate specific hormones such as thyroid and adrenal hormones.
How it works: Vitamin D3 is converted in the liver and then the kidneys into its active hormonal form, which helps regulate calcium and phosphorus absorption and metabolism.
When vitamin D levels are too low, the body may struggle to absorb enough calcium, potentially weakening bones over time. Low Vitamin D levels can lead to increased disease vulnerability and there is even evidence that low Vitamin D levels are found more frequently in cancer patients. Lack of Vitamin D leaves us less able to fight infection, and leads to muscle and bone loss increasing our fragility and increasing risks of serious injuries and falls.
Vitamin K2 is a form of vitamin K, found in foods such as certain fermented foods and some animal products. It is also available as a supplement, commonly in the MK-7 or MK-4 forms.
It helps activate proteins involved in blood clotting, bone health and the regulation of calcium in body tissues.
K2 ensures Bone strength: Activates osteoclascin, a protein involved in incorporating calcium into bone.
Calcium regulation: Activates matrix Gla protein (MGP), which helps regulate the deposition of calcium in soft tissues.
Normal blood clotting: Vitamin K is essential for activating several proteins involved in clotting.
Bone maintenance: Supports the normal processes involved in maintaining healthy bone tissue.
How it works: Vitamin K2 helps switch on certain proteins by modifying them through a process called gamma-carboxylation. Without sufficient vitamin K, these proteins cannot function as effectively.
K2 is sometimes described as helping direct calcium towards bones and away from soft tissues. This is a useful simplification of its biological role, but evidence that K2 supplements prevent calcium buildup in arteries or cardiovascular disease remains uncertain.
Vitamin A — The Vision, Immunity and Cell Health Vitamin
Vitamin A includes preformed vitamin A (retinol) from animal foods and provitamin A carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, found in colorful fruits and vegetables.
It is essential for vision, healthy skin and the normal functioning of the immune system.
Vitamin A Helps the eyes adapt to low light and maintain healthy surface tissues.
Immune health: Supports the barriers that protect the body and the function of immune cells.
Skin and tissues: Helps maintain the lining of the respiratory tract, digestive tract and other tissues.
Cell growth: Supports normal cell development and differentiation.
Reproductive health: Plays a role in normal reproduction and embryonic development.
How it works: Vitamin A produces compounds, including retinoic acid, that regulate gene expression and influence how cells grow and develop. Another form, retinal, is essential for the visual cycle in the eyes.
Vitamin A is vital, but more is not necessarily better. Excessive amounts of preformed vitamin A can accumulate in the body and cause toxicity.

Metabolic Healing and Cellular Nourishment: A Holistic approach
to Weight Loss

We often think about weight loss from the outside in, calorie
deficit, caloric burn, self denial and sacrifice, suffering etc. But if
we can shift our thinking about weight loss being more a result of
an ongoing process of metabolic healing leading to a greater
holistic and global wellness, it can help make the effort seem less
about a transient effort of self denial and the bigger picture, or
goal begins to appear.
There are many factors at play when it comes to metabolism and
a person’s weight, and every body is completely different, (we
know that now right?). Therefore, hormones, nutrition and foods,
strengthening and movement supported by a personalized clinical presence can truly help reset the clock and bring the body into a balance that it possibly hasn’t felt in years. We want to help your body function the way it’s designed to.
This wellness-focused approach explores how science-based weight loss strategies like nutrition planning, strength training, and medical guidance work together to assist people in actualizing lasting, whole body and mind results without extreme restrictions or fad diets.
At Willow Holistic Health, our weight management
program is guided by experienced medical professionals who
understand hormone health, metabolism, and functional medicine.
When you’re ready to nourish your body, heal your metabolism,
and transform your health, we are here to help every step of the
way.
Willow Holistic Health’s weight management is centered around
your biology—using science-based evaluation, medical expertise,
and customized plans designed to help your body release stored
fat naturally. This approach takes you out of diet culture and into
empowered wellness care. We offer individualized approaches, a
range of conventional and specialty lab offerings, lots of
resources and suggestions from strength training to bio-hacking
and a LOT of personal support and care.
If you are feeling frustrated by stubborn weight gain, cravings, or low energy? You’re not alone—and it’s not your fault. Women
experience biological shifts throughout life that influence
metabolism, hunger, hormones, and insulin sensitivity. When
those internal systems, or external conditions change, traditional
dieting simply isn’t enough. A wellness approach looks deeper,
helping to heal a dysregulated metabolism instead of trying to
“fight” your body into losing weight.
Why a Wellness Approach to Weight Loss Matters
Weight loss advice everywhere tends to focus on eating less and
exercising more. While those strategies matter, they don’t solve
metabolic imbalances or hormonal changes that affect people,
especially during their 40s, 50s and 60s. When hormones shift,
your metabolism slows, cravings increase, and blood sugar
becomes harder to regulate—all of which make weight loss more
difficult.
A wellness approach doesn’t place responsibility on your
willpower. Instead, it reframes weight loss as a metabolic process
influenced by:
• hormones
• insulin sensitivity
• muscle mass
• inflammation
• stress
• sleep
• nutrition composition
When these conditions are ameliorated, your body becomes more responsive to fat loss and more resilient over time. Many people feel relief knowing there’s a scientific explanation behind their symptoms, not a personal failure.
Willow Holistic Health take a medically guided approach using
clinical tools, lifestyle support, and medication only when
beneficial and appropriate. Your personal metabolism, hormones,
medical history, lifestyle conditions, levels of stress and goals
shape your plan.
Your experience includes:
• medical evaluation
• personalized nutrition guidance
• strength-focused movement strategies
• medication options (when appropriate)
• continued support and monitoring
This approach is about more than fat loss; it builds strength,
improves long-term health, and provides voluminous amounts of
education and personal knowledge rather than just shrinking a
number on the scale.
Led by Experienced Medical Professionals
One of the most unique aspects of our wellness weight loss
program is clinical leadership. Your program is directed by Susie
Corcoran FNP-C, CNM, MN, RN who is a board-certified nurse practitioner with advanced training in metabolism, hormone
health, and certification in medical weight loss through the A4M.
Susie Corcoran FNP-C, continuously expands her knowledge
base as the ever expanding science and data around anti-aging
medicine grows and grows.

Tomatoes have many nutrients, but one of them is Lycopene.

They are one of the richest dietary sources of lycopene, a carotenoid with strong antioxidant activity.

Lycopene has been studied for:

Cardiovascular health and
preventing oxidative stress
Skin health and protection from UV-related damage
Prostate health
Overall cellular health

Interestingly, cooking tomatoes can actually increase the amount of lycopene your body can absorb. Tomato sauce, tomato paste, and cooked tomatoes can therefore be excellent sources. Adding some fat—such as olive oil—also improves absorption because lycopene is fat-soluble.

Other beneficial compounds: lutein and zeaxanthin and other polyphenols

This is the time to eat as many fresh tomatoes as you can! Stop by a local farmers market and get some for a lovely dinner tonight!

Critical Insurance Update!! This is the time of year that employers have employees choose new insurance plans. Most of us know that Providence is closing at the end of this year. A lot of companies are choosing MODA as an option. But please be advised!!!!
MODA 360 is a closed managed health group, meaning, you will be assigned a MODA 360 Primary Care Home, of which we are NOT one.
And your general range of choices of where you can receive care is limited. It is of course, less expensive that the other MODA option, but with the other MODA options, you can go to any provider that accepts MODA. So, Hopefully this can help some people who are trying to make these decisions right now.
