(5862)

Our children's hospital in Aurora, Colorado is the cornerstone of our growing system of pediatric healthcare services. It is located on 48 acres at the juncture of I-225 and Colfax on the Anschutz Medical Campus, at the eastern edge of the Denver metro area. Here, we provide comprehensive medical care for kids from birth through adolescence. In addition to being the only pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center in the region, we treat virtually all conditions that affect children, from the most minor to the most severe. Our care team members are experts in treating kids and understanding their special needs.

Some patients don't get to go trick-or-treating. So instead, members of the Denver Broncos and Denver Broncos Cheerleaders brought the treats to them.

We're still cheering for our champion powerlifter! Maddie has been a part of the Children’s Colorado family since she was just a toddler. With frequent trips to our Sie Center for Down Syndrome, Aerodigestive Clinic and other specialties, our team works closely with her family to keep her pursuing her dreams. Dreams like bringing home not one but four medals in powerlifting at this year’s Special Olympics USA Games, including two gold!

“She loves going to Children’s Colorado,” Her mom, Kim, says. “That’s her hospital. Those are her doctors. That’s her place. She absolutely feels welcome, and it’s not sad – it's happy. She knows she is going to be taken care of and listened to.”

Go, Maddie, go! We can't wait to see what's ahead.

Chris always wanted to be a firefighter. But growing up with a congenital heart defect called transposition of the great arteries, he was told the physically demanding career might not be possible for him.

With support from our team in the Heart Institute, Chris achieved his childhood goal. During fire service training, he discovered his roommate, Spencer, had a similar story: heart surgery at 2 weeks old, with follow-up surgery here as an adult. Chris says he was relieved when he met Spencer at training,

“Because as a kid, you know you’re different.”

Chris, now 45, is a captain with Poudre Fire Authority. Spencer, now 46, is a lieutenant at the same station, Station 3 in Fort Collins. Our team still cares for each of them, even though we’re a children’s hospital. That’s because, even if some of the chairs are a little small, “you need to go where the experts are,” Spencer says.

Because our Heart Institute treats more congenital and pediatric heart conditions than any other in the Rocky Mountain region, we have unique expertise in caring for patients you might not expect to see in our hospital beds. Specialists in our Adult Congenital Disease Program host 2,500 appointments each year, helping adult patients manage their health, prepare for changing needs and safely pursue meaningful goals — no matter their age.

For Chris and Spencer, that means they can remain diligent about their heart health while continuing to serve their Northern Colorado community. Chris says, “There’s a certain standard we have to meet in the fire service, and working with my doctors at Children’s Hospital Colorado, they found a way I could meet those metrics and exceed them."

The moments that matter most are worth getting back to. Just ask these patients who've recovered after illness and injury.

-Meghan’s back to shaping the future of girls' flag football.
-Josiah’s back to mountain bike racing and nordic skiing.
-Lydia’s back to playing volleyball and basketball without pain.
-Cara’s back to her pursuing dream of being a professional dancer.

It's thanks, in part, to our spine team — and a whole lot of tenacity.

When her son wasn’t meeting milestones, Teresa’s intuition led her to Children’s Hospital Colorado, South Campus, just down the street from their home in Highlands Ranch. It turned out fluid buildup was impacting his hearing. Then ear tube surgery “made such a big difference in his life.”

When a Highlands Ranch mother noticed her youngest child was not meeting his milestones, her motherly instincts took over and her persistence helped her family discover that her son, Mateo,
