Breastfeeding is a learned skill. It is an art. It is one that only you and your baby can conquer, working together side by side. The beauty is in the process, the long nights, the moments where you want to give up, but ultimately push through. The moment when you look back and realize you conquered something really hard.

However, my job is to also support you if you say this isn’t for you and you ultimately want to take a different path. There’s no right or wrong answer in motherhood, the journey is solely based on YOU. I will always support a mom’s choice while being your biggest cheerleader along the way🤍

As a seasoned postpartum doula, who has literally worked with hundreds of babies and seen it all, these are a few unpopular opinions:

You don’t need 20 different types of swaddles.
• A simple jersey + Muslin blanket will always do the trick. (It is my only MUST HAVE item when working with new families). You also won’t have to worry about the velcro wearing off after every wash and your baby ultimately breaking free.

The portable breast pump won’t be enough to establish/sustain your milk supply.
• I know it’s inconvienent to be hooked up to a chorded pump and stuck within a certain radius, but your pump needs to be hospital grade and plugged into an outlet to have a high enough suction to effectively remove milk. A portable pump should never be used as your primary breast pump.

The high-priced bottle sterilizer will take up more space, require you to buy more detergent tablets made by the manufacturer and monthly maintenance than it’s worth. Also, most lack the storage or capacity to run everything in one load. Which means you’d need to run more than one.
• If it’s up to me, I will hand wash every single bottle, every single time. Most require you to prewash anyway. Simply running a bottle/pump part load through your dishwasher will suffice.

Automatic formula maker machines could be the culprit for gas and other gastro issues.
• Most are known for causing extreme gas/constipation in babies because the water/formula ratio is often inaccurate. The machine also requires regular cleaning and maintenance to prevent the formula from clogging. If it’s up to me, I’m going to hand make every single bottle, every single time.

The baby product industry is a billion dollar industry in which thrives on anxious, unsure moms. They make you think these products will somehow make your life easier, they won’t. Sometimes quite the contrary.

Of course, I also believe in full parent autonomy and support whatever a family decides to buy. However, just know your worth should never be tied to high-ticket items. Your baby will love you regardless. YOU are enough🤍

Here’s a small glimpse of what overnight care looks like when baby is asleep.

Lightening the load for my clients can also refer to the next day. Things I like to do:

Make a batch of formula, pour it into individual bottles, label it and place it in the fridge for the day. For example, if my shift ends at 6am, I’ll start making the formula around 4:30am.
• This makes for smooth/easy feedings during the day. It also allows for dad or a family member to readily feed the baby while mom is resting.

(It’s important to always follow the formula’s manufacturer instructions- every brand is different)

Hand wash bottles/pump parts BEFORE placing them in the sterilizer.
• This ensures all milk residue is removed. Sterilizers kill germs, however, they don’t tend to remove milk and fatty oils as well. (Yes, even the high priced ones 😉)

People often ask my why:

Why did I become a postpartum doula/NCS?

The answer is always the same: motherhood taught me how much moms need support. I remember the exhaustion after a long night and the uncertainty of caring for a newborn. Becoming a postpartum doula allowed me to become the person I needed 6 years ago.

Known for my calming presence, deep expertise and unwavering reliability during one of life’s most tender transitions, I bring that support and compassion to each and every family I serve.

What’s the difference between the Haakaa and the Ladybug milk collector?

•
•

To sum it up, if you’re looking for a way to “pump” and still increase or maintain your milk supply, the Haakaa is clearly the winner!

Most moms like to pop it on the other breast while nursing, which gently suctions out milk from the other side. Or you can wear them around the house, however, make sure it’s secure when full🩷

Happy BHM! 🖤✊🏽❤️

It is truly a privilege to be doing what I love. A passion with such a rich history, yet ugly circumstances considering.

As a black birthworker, I’m constantly in search of more understanding and more wisdom. Everyday I try to walk in tune with my ancestors. Slowly but surely getting back to my “roots”.

Honoring those who came before me; and those who will come after.
