5 Things I Know to be True at 50
My life changes when my decisions change.
I stopped waiting to feel different before behaving differently. Ladies, whether it's your health, keeping promises to yourself, creating, working, resting, or rebuilding your identity after changes in motherhood, transformation isn't really a state you arrive at. It's a series of decisions. At 50, I understand that I become her every time I make a decision she would make.
Keeping my promises to myself is required.
The art of self-love isn’t glamorous. Sometimes it’s simple. It's taking the walk because you said you would. Working on the project. Going to bed. Saving the money. Doing the uncomfortable thing. Saying NO because you don’t want to.
Ladies, let’s work to become someone whose own word matters to her. At 50, I've learned that one of the most loving things I can do for myself is believe me when I say I'm going to do something
Two things can be true at the same time.
This one is BIG. Some days, ambiguity is where I live. I can miss my daughter terribly and love the freedom of an empty house. I can adore the woman I am and want to become someone different. Ladies, you can love your husband or your children, and the life you've built, without making them responsible for your fulfillment.
At 50, I've learned that conflicting feelings don't mean I'm confused. I am human, after all.
You can be grateful and want more.
I’ve realized something about myself that I didn’t expect: my ambition is coming back. Not the ambition of my twenties, when I felt like I had something to prove. And not the ambition of my thirties and forties, when so much of my energy was tied to building a family, raising children, and taking care of what needed to be taken care of.
At 50, I’m looking at the life I’ve built with tremendous gratitude. AND, I want more again.
I’m engaging radical responsibility.
At 50, I’ve stopped waiting for someone else to make my life work. The buck stops with me. That doesn’t mean everything that has happened to me was my choice. It doesn’t mean other people haven’t disappointed me, hurt me, failed me, or affected the direction of my life. It means I’ve decided that what happens next is mine.
If I don’t like where I am, I have to change it. If I want to build something, I have to do the work.If I need boundaries, I have to set them. Ladies, if you want a different life, you have to own every single choice. Lose interest in the blame game (even when the blame is justified).
What are you becoming more responsible for in this season of your life?
Let's talk about it!
