Behind every prescription is a person. And behind every medication routine is a team working to support their health, safety, and independence. 💙

For nurses and support professionals working in IDD services, medication management goes far beyond filling prescriptions. It takes communication, coordination, education, and a pharmacy partner who understands the realities of their work.

In our latest blog, Deb Maloy, RN, CDDN, Director of Clinical Education and Services at Tarrytown Expocare Pharmacy, shares seven things IDD nurses and support staff wish more pharmacy partners understood.

Because great pharmacy partnerships aren't just about getting medications where they need to be. They're about understanding the people and teams who depend on them.

October gives us two important opportunities to learn, recognize and advocate. 💙❤️

This month, we recognize Down Syndrome Awareness Month and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month.

At Tarrytown Expocare Pharmacy, serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities means looking beyond medications. It means seeing the whole person, recognizing individual needs and preferences, and equipping families, DSPs, nurses and provider teams with meaningful education and resources.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing information that promotes greater awareness, safer medication management and a better understanding of the health considerations that may impact the individuals we serve.

Most importantly, during Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we celebrate people with Down syndrome; their voices, talents, accomplishments and contributions to their families, workplaces and communities. We also recognize the families, DSPs, nurses and provider teams who work alongside them to support greater independence, choice and opportunity.

Here’s to a month of awareness, advocacy, inclusion and continued learning.

DSP Recognition Week ended. Their work didn't.

Today, Direct Support Professionals are still there.

Helping someone start their morning. Managing medications. Making dinner. Navigating a difficult day. Planning an outing. Listening. Advocating. Celebrating progress that someone else might never see.

One of the DSPs we met last week told us she loves going to work so much that it doesn't really feel like going to work.

That stayed with us.

Because behind every story we heard was someone who keeps showing up for other people—not for recognition, but because the work and the people matter to them.

DSP Recognition Week gave us a reason to pause.

But our appreciation extends far beyond a week.

To Direct Support Professionals everywhere: thank you for what you do, for the relationships you build and for the countless things you do every day that most of us will never see.

The week ends. The work doesn't.

And neither does our commitment to the people who make this work possible.

Great support doesn't always announce itself.

Sometimes it's knowing what someone enjoys.

Listening to the story.

Remembering the routine.

Finding a community activity based on someone's interests—not simply what's available.

Or keeping the bird feeders full because you know how much someone loves sitting outside and watching them.

Those details may seem small from the outside.

They aren't.

They're what happens when you know the person, not just the care plan.

And over the last week, we were reminded again and again that some of the most meaningful support happens in ordinary moments most people will never see.

That's the work worth seeing.

Sometimes recognition looks like an engraved award.

Sometimes it looks like tears.

A huge smile.

Disbelief.

A hug.

Or someone quietly telling you they've never received an award before.

One DSP told us she was taking her card home to put on the refrigerator. Another couldn't believe she'd even been nominated. Another simply lit up when he realized the surprise was for him.

Those are the moments that stayed with us.

Not because of what was being presented—but because of what it meant to the person receiving it.

Direct Support Professionals spend their days noticing, supporting, encouraging and advocating for other people.

Sometimes the people who make others feel seen deserve to be reminded that we see them, too.

Apparently, our provider partners are pretty good at keeping secrets.

A fake tour. A locked conference room. A strategic distraction. Someone sneaking in through another entrance. And one DSP who thought she was there to watch somebody else receive an award.

All so someone could walk into a room and discover that the people around them had come together for one reason:

To celebrate them.

Some of our favorite moments last week happened in those first few seconds—the confusion, the realization and then the smile.

Because sometimes the people who spend every day showing up for everyone else deserve to have everyone show up for them.

And yes, we'd absolutely help keep the secret again.

DSP Recognition Week may have ended, but we still have stories we want to share. 💙

Last week, our team spent time in homes, day programs and offices across the country celebrating some incredible Direct Support Professionals.

There were surprises. Tears. Hugs. Entire rooms cheering. Coworkers doing everything they could to keep a secret. And some very surprised DSPs.

But what stayed with us most wasn’t the awards.
It was the people.

The DSP who knows what brings someone joy. The coworker everyone can count on. The person who notices the little things and keeps showing up, day after day.

And the communities around them—the individuals cheering, coworkers planning surprises and teams coming together to say, “We see what you do, and it matters.”

DSP Recognition Week gives us a reason to pause. But the work doesn’t stop when the week ends, and neither should our appreciation.

So we have a few more stories to share.

To the people who show up every day: thank you. 💜

DSPs notice the small changes. They know the people they support. They advocate, problem-solve and help keep medication routines moving safely every day.

For DSP Recognition Week, Kristi Torres, PharmD, our Vice President of Account Management, joined The Arc of Southern Chesapeake’s Navigating Neurodiversity podcast to talk about the important role DSPs and caregivers play in medication management.

At the same time, members of our team are at the ANCOR Policy Summit and Hill Day, joining providers and advocates in supporting policies that strengthen community-based services and the direct support workforce.

We’re proud to celebrate DSPs this week—and grateful for the difference they make every day.

The people closest to an individual often notice what others cannot.

Direct support professionals recognize the small changes. They remember what happened months earlier. They speak up, ask questions and advocate for the people who depend on them.

And during every medication pass, they balance that responsibility with everything else it takes to make a house feel like home.

As we approach DSP Recognition Week, Kristi Torres, PharmD, reflects on the people behind every medication pass—and why understanding their daily reality is essential to providing better pharmacy support.
