Tuesday Coaching Life feeling harder than it should? Let's bridge that gap.

Coaching for ADHD, autistic, and AuDHD adults (diagnosed or questioning) who understand their patterns but get stuck between knowing and doing.

The “ADHD is a superpower” narrative always leaves out what happens when you adopt this perspective in the long run.

Even when ignoring the neurosupremacy of the narrative, the 3 major ways I’ve seen this narrative harm ADHDer’s is 1) through created an imbalance in relationships, 2) supporting unrealistic expectations and demands on your energy levels that could drive you straight into burnout, and 3) shielding you from better education that can increase self-awareness and thus self-acceptance of being a human with ADHD.

I understand why newly diagnosed ADHD adults are tempted to embrace this view at the start. Yet rarely do I see anyone benefit from taking this stance in the long run.

Why adopt a perspective that might actually hurt you in the end?

I’m appalled by every educator/advocate/coach who went to Paris’ ADHD event and decided to either 1) not address the damaging “ADHD is a superpower” narrative or 2) address it by saying it’s okay for some people to adopt that mentality.

I work with ADHD autistic clients every day and for me, this narrative is the fastest way to burnout. On top of how it is a part of “neurosupremacy” where the belief in super powers minimizes the struggles of others.

I had hope for the event because it was a first but the videos I’m seeing released just horrify me. Not only because NO WHITE CREATOR is addressing the lack of diversity but because the event seems to have done the opposite - which is promote misinformation, not tackle it.

ADHD is not a superpower.
Non-white ADHDers exist.
Non-rich ADHDers exist.
Representation matters.

Being an ADHD autistic support professional working with ADHD autistic adults navigating energy, relationships, and burnout means I have experience with all of it. But it also means I’m not innocent of repeating past mistakes.

Here’s a little story of what I did to support myself and how ADHD planning (or lack of) can help support your mental health when you need it. With some assistance of a dear friend.

I work with people with ADHD and autism, but I’m not immune to messing things up. Which includes forgetting to take medication and supplements sometimes.

Being comfortably ADHD and autistic means understanding imperfection is a part of life.

When you’re dating someone autistic, discussing consent matters a lot. Autistic folks are at a higher risk of sexual abuse and assault. Ignore what you hear on social media that goes against these facts.

Doesn’t matter if you are autistic or allistic, have the conversation. It’s better to initiate it than to assume, because assuming could be the worst move you make.

Also, if you follow Nat LaJune, don’t follow me. Her platform supports r*pe culture. No one should be spreading the word that “didn’t know better” = permission to assault.

Some people believe autistic folks are pessimistic because they hear what sounds like negativity. But the desire for precision and accuracy isn’t the same as negativity or even pessimism.

When we widen the issue, the harder pattern to confront is when a regular use of the negative is actually caution over if joy without other harder emotions can exist. When a focus on loss feels safer than hope because of everything already lived through.

it’s important to untangle what assumptions we are making based on trying to survive. Compared to how we actually feel and what we want moving forward.

ADHD autistic adults can be incredibly hard on themselves when consistency disappears.

A few hard days can start to feel like proof you’ve lost momentum, discipline, your ability to keep acting up.

But you’ve figured things out before.

You’ve restarted routines. You’ve come back after burnout. You’ve adapted when the old way stopped working.

Sometimes keeping going means taking the break. Even if it’s a big break.

Rest doesn’t erase what you know how to do. A pause does not mean you’ve failed.

You can pause and recover. You can come back when you’re ready.

If you figure it out before, you’ll figure it out again.

Sometimes ambition is actually just a cover for survival.

Many late diagnosed ADHD autistic professionals learned to stay safe by over performing, overachieving, and never slowing down. This may have helped at the start, but could now create more exhaustion.

if you’re not sure if this is you, ask yourself: are you safe enough to do anything differently? Are you still in survival mode?

I am an ADHD autistic coach. If you’re looking for a personalized strategies, you’re welcome to join the coaching waitlist.
