ANYONE WANT A SPIDER BABY?! 🪴
Three years ago, I was gifted an heirloom spider plant. From Pamela Perry . For the longest time, I kept it indoors as a houseplant, but two years ago, circumstance forced it to move outside for the summer. It did so well that putting it outdoors each summer became an annual habit!
Last summer, it surprised me with tiny white flower blooms for the first time ever. This summer, it has surprised me again it is completely loaded with seed pods!
While spider plants usually reproduce by sending off babies (spiderettes), getting seed pods is much rarer because the flowers need to be successfully pollinated by outdoor pollinators. These green, three sided capsules will dry into papery brown pods over the next few weeks and split open to reveal tiny, flat black seeds.
The coolest part? Growing spider plants from seed comes with a genetic surprise, even if the parent plant is variegated, seed grown babies often revert to a solid, vibrant green!
Has anyone ever harvested and grown spider plants from seed before? I’m going to try! I have given away dozens of spider babies. Now I will have hundreds of seeds to gift!
