2 years!!! It’s been 2 years since Abel received his infusion of an experimental gene therapy drug. We will never know how much impact this had on him as we don’t know what his trajectory would have been without it but we whole heartedly believe we made the right choice for him. He is doing amazing and we are excited for the advancements made every day towards further treatments and hopefully a cure. They are hoping this drug will be FDA approved by next year and Abel is happy to continue being studied to help other boys receive it. He continues to amaze us with his strength and bravery 💚

September 27th will mark 2 years since our sweet Abel had gene therapy. We are so thankful for how well he is doing. We hope and pray that he continues to maintain as much muscle as possible as they continue to come out with more treatments. Thursday we headed to Stanford for his 2 year follow up. He had blood work, EKG, echo, PT assessment, and a dr visit. Pretty easy visit split up over 2 days. It wouldn’t be a trip to San Fran if we didn’t visit Dave and Busters for a little fun! We were also able to time it so that we could hit a small PPMD (parent project muscular dystrophy) convention. It was nice to be able to attend a smaller, more personalized event, our first one. We quickly realized the early morning focus group where we shared our story of diagnosis and opinion on newborn screening dug up some old feelings that will possibly forever feel raw. No matter how many times I share the story (while advocating for early diagnosis or with a friend) it always gets me going. It was great connecting with new families, Abel had a great time playing with legos and we were able to hear some amazing perspectives and testimonies. Again we are so thankful for a “healthy” happy boy 💚

Today is World Duchenne Awareness Day! In honor of raising awareness we held our 3rd annual walk for awareness yesterday. We were fortunate to wrap up just before the rain started. A huge thank you to our supporters new and old. Whether that was purchasing a shirt, sharing posts or showing up to walk in honor of Abel and all the other boys affected by this terrible disease. It means so much to all of us when we pass through town and see a green light bulb or someone wearing an Abel’s Army shirt. It is a great reminder that we are not in this fight alone. 💚

It’s almost time for our 3rd annual Walk for Awareness! This year it will be on September 6th. I am still thinking on a time. I want to make sure it doesn’t interfere with anyone’s church service. I want to do a black shirt this year and possibly a tank top option as well. Here are some designs I am considering. What is your vote? Would you be interested in a tank top option?!

We had the most amazing time at our very first Cure Duchenne conference! Lots of swimming, new friends, amazing food, the coolest kids room with all the gaming they could dream of, and awesome classes. We wrapped up the trip with a day at Discovery Cove. Abel and Jared swam with a dolphin and I made unwanted contact with a manta ray swimming below me 🤣

When traveling we have to bring Abel’s medication which has to be kept cool. Jared got this cooler bag a few years ago from donating blood and it works great because it’s red and noticeable and it goes over the handle of our bag easily. I’m always paranoid about forgetting it on the plane or in the airport. I also finally got a kit put together with his hydrocortisone tablets and injection. When you take steroids regularly you become adrenal insufficient and if you are to become ill the body is unable to cope requiring hydrocortisone tablets for minor illness and an injection in case of fractured bones or vomiting. We learned our lesson the hard way when he became very ill on our cruise last February and we had to take him to the Dr on the ship and get IV hydrocortisone. Fortunately there was a mysterious $1000 credit on our account which barely covered the cost of the visit. 🙏 I also made him a permanent bracelet with adrenal insufiency on it, so if he isn’t with us the paramedics/drs know what he needs.
