Some babies are held in our arms. Others are held in our hearts for a lifetime.

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time to recognize the families whose stories include miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal loss, or a goodbye that came far too soon.

We know that not every pregnancy ends with a baby with us at home. Not every birth story is one of celebration. And not every mother gets to watch her child grow.

But every baby has a story. Every loss deserves acknowledgment. And every family deserves compassion, support, and space to grieve in their own way.

Seeing blood during pregnancy can be scary and it can be hard to know what warrants a call, what needs prompt attention, and what can happen during an otherwise healthy pregnancy.

We put together this simple 🟢🟡🔴 guide to help you quickly determine your next steps.

One important note: Even if what you’re experiencing falls in the GREEN category, we still want to know about it.💚

“Green” doesn’t mean don’t tell your midwife. It simply means that spotting can occur in these circumstances without necessarily being a cause for alarm or recommending additional testing/screening.

🏡 HOME BIRTH MYTH:
“You’ll get more care, attention, and help in the hospital.”
REALITY:
Hospital birth teams work incredibly hard. We never want to put down our counterparts, because the reality is both are necessary in the birth community. You'll receive *different* care, attention, and help in a hospital setting.

So we'll start by telling you what we know to be true.
Here is what you'll receive with our home birth care:
You are the focus.

Your midwifery team comes to you and we stay with you. We’re there to monitor you and baby, support you through labor, help with positioning and comfort measures, keep an eye on how things are progressing, and care for both you and your newborn after birth.

There’s no call button because we’re already there.

And that care doesn’t begin when labor starts or end when we pack up our birth bags. Home birth midwifery is built around relationship-based, individualized care—from prenatal visits, through labor and birth, and into the postpartum period. We get to know you throughout the entire pregnancy. It's a complete privilege to know you as well as we do by the time it's time, and ever after.

Different birth settings offer different kinds of support. For families who choose home birth, one of the things they often value most is simply this your birth team is there for you, start to finish.

Happy Labor Day! 🤍

Our office is closed today in observance of Labor Day — but as midwives, we know that labor doesn’t exactly observe office hours. 😉

We’ll be back to our regular office hours tomorrow. Wishing all of our families a safe and restful Labor Day!

✨ Reminder: There’s a range of “normal” when it comes to baby size!

Babies come in all different weights and lengths, and healthy doesn’t have one specific number attached to it. Genetics, gestational age, maternal factors, and plenty of other variables can influence how big or small a baby is at birth.

And while ultrasound can be a helpful tool for monitoring growth, estimated fetal weight is just that…an estimate! Ultrasound measurements, especially later in pregnancy, have a recognized margin of error and don’t always predict birth weight accurately.

So if you’ve ever been surprised by how big or how little your baby actually was compared with the estimate, you’re definitely not alone!
