The PATIENTS Program The PATIENTS Program partners with patients and care providers to answer questions about the best treatment options to improve health and quality of life.

PATIENTS stands for PATient-centered Involvement in Evaluating the effectiveNess of TreatmentS – which is exactly what it sounds like, and not as complex as it seems. We want to invite patients will all kinds of conditions to get more involved in their health care by making informed, empowered decisions. We also help connect patients with the research and clinical trials that are of interest to them. Our emphasis on patient advocacy fosters partnerships between patients and researchers. We believe that patients who are able to manage their own conditions are better able to share what works, and what doesn't, with researchers and health care providers. This translates to better health outcomes for generations to come.

New Episode of The Bridge

The Dialysis Mindset: Finding Purpose Through Lived Experience
What happens when you turn your lived experience into a mission to help others?
In this episode, Paris Barnes sits down with Cameron Lillie-Liberto, a graduate of the PATIENTS Professors Academy, kidney patient advocate, speaker, and founder of The Dialysis Mindset.
Born with kidney disease and having experienced dialysis, transplantation, and advocacy firsthand, Cameron shares how he transformed life's challenges into a purpose-driven journey. Together, they discuss resilience, patient advocacy, the power of community, and the importance of seeing people as more than their diagnosis.
Purpose.
Perseverance.
Patient Voice.

Our team's presentation at the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference 2026 hosted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, was a big success!

Melinda Aldridge, Paris Barnes, MS, PMP, and Thomas Howarth presented an interactive workshop about the Business Model Canvas, a strategic planning tool that can be used to create trustworthy community-university partnerships.

Thank you to those who attended, shared their experiences, and asked excellent questions.

Thank you to those who have built the Business Model Canvas tool through your groundbreaking work and insightful comments.

Paris Barnes, our Senior Training Specialist and host of The Bridge podcast, is Costa Rica-bound!

She will join the Costa Rica Faculty Development Institute at the Center for Global Engagement at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in collaboration with the InterAmerican Center for Global Health (CISG) and the University of Maryland. They will convene in December.

The program immerses a select cohort of UMB and UMD faculty, post-doctoral, and staff members in immersive development programs in Costa Rica. The goal: Globalize their courses, modules, tracks, clinical electives, or cocurricular programs.

Paris received massive support from faculty at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy to bring these practices to their programming.

Links in comments talk more about the program and Paris' work on "Substance Use and Harm Reduction Through Comparative Case Studies."

Who's in Your Care Circle?

When we think about caregiving, we often think of one person. But what happens when recovery, aging, or dementia care requires a whole team?
In this episode, Paris Barnes talks with Gretchen Gutendorf Tucker, a researcher focused on aging, dementia, caregiving, and recovery after fall-related injuries. Together, they explore the importance of care networks, the challenges families face when transitioning from hospital to home, and why supporting caregivers matters as much as supporting patients.

Aging well takes community.
Recovery takes support.
Caregiving takes a village.
