It’s one of the most common questions we get in the treatment room: "Are deep tissue and deep pressure the same thing?"
While they sound interchangeable, they actually refer to two entirely different goals and techniques! Here is how to know which one your body is asking for:
Deep Tissue Massage (The "Where")
The Goal: Focuses on treating specific dysfunction, chronic pain, postural imbalances, and adhesions (knots) deep within the muscle layers and fascia.
The Technique: Uses slow, targeted strokes, friction, and specialized pressure applied directly across the grain of the muscle to release deeply held tension.
Best for: Recovering from injuries, addressing chronic tight spots (like stubborn lower back or neck pain), and rehabilitating scar tissue.
Deep Pressure Massage (The "How")
The Goal: Delivers a firm, strong overall pressure throughout the entire massage to soothe the nervous system and satisfy a craving for heavy touch.
The Technique: Applies consistent, heavier force across broad muscle groups, but without the clinical, targeted stripping or cross-fiber work of deep tissue.
Best for: Those who simply love a firmer Swedish or relaxation massage and find lighter touch unfulfilling.
