"Will my throat hurt when I wake up?"

It is a very common question! During general anesthesia, your Nurse Anesthesiologist carefully places a specialized breathing tube to keep your lungs perfectly safe while you sleep. Because this tube rests gently past your vocal cords, it is completely normal to wake up with a mild scratchy throat, similar to how you feel when you are fighting off a cold. It usually goes away within a day or two, and a popsicle or some cold water in the recovery room works wonders!

We will always encourage you to quit smoking, but we especially want you to pause before surgery!

Smoking makes your airways highly reactive and decreases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. Even quitting for just 12 to 24 hours before your procedure drastically reduces the carbon monoxide in your blood, making anesthesia much safer and your recovery much smoother. Your Nurse Anesthesiologist is here to keep you safe—honesty is the best policy!

"Has anyone in your family ever had a bad reaction to anesthesia?"

Your Nurse Anesthesiologist will always ask this question before your surgery, and here is an example why: there is a rare, inherited condition called Malignant Hyperthermia that can cause a severe reaction to certain anesthetic gases.

While it is extremely uncommon, knowing your family history allows us to select completely different, perfectly safe medications for you so you can rest easy!

"Who is breathing for me while I am asleep?"

It is a thought that makes many patients understandably nervous, but protecting your airway is our most profound responsibility. Under general anesthesia, the powerful medications that keep you completely unaware and pain-free also relax all the muscles in your body—including your diaphragm and the natural reflexes that protect your lungs.

Because you cannot protect your own airway while you sleep, your Nurse Anesthesiologist steps in to do it for you. We use highly advanced, gentle techniques to secure your airway, and state-of-the-art ventilators to deliver the precise mixture of oxygen your body needs with every single breath.

While the mountains and interior get a lot of attention this time of year, there is nothing quite like a quiet October drive down Maine's Route 1!

As the summer crowds head home, the coastal towns get a little quieter, the ocean air gets crisper, and the fall colors pop against the water. Whether you are grabbing a warm coffee in Camden or driving the quiet stretch up to Machias, our Nurse Anesthesiologists love calling this beautiful state home.

What is your favorite coastal town to visit in the fall?

Protecting our team's time outside the OR means our Nurse Anesthesiologists actually get to enjoy these classic Maine weekends with their own families. Have a great week!

"Will I be asleep if I need a C-Section?"

For the vast majority of Cesarean deliveries, the answer is no! We want you to be awake to meet your baby. Your Nurse Anesthesiologist will typically use a spinal or epidural to completely numb your lower body. You won't feel any sharp pain, but you will be wide awake, breathing on your own, and ready to hear that very first cry! 👩‍🍼
