What American-Style Massage Really Is (and Isn’t)!
A lot of people come into massage thinking it’s about “getting toxins out” or that deeper pressure automatically means a better massage.
I want to clear that up in a simple, honest way.
Massage does not flush out toxins or “old blood.” Your body already has an incredibly efficient system for that, your liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, lungs, and skin handle it all day, every day.
What massage actually does is help your nervous system shift out of stress mode, improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and support your body’s natural ability to recover and move better.
Another common misconception is that deeper pressure = better results. In reality, your muscles don’t release just because more force is applied. If pressure is too intense, the nervous system often responds by tightening and protecting the area, which can actually block the release we’re trying to achieve.
It’s also helpful to understand that “deep tissue” refers to working with deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, not applying as much pressure as possible. Deep tissue work is about technique, precision, and how the body responds..not force.
Effective massage is about tissue response, not pressure. Sometimes that feels deep and intense, and other times slower, more moderate pressure creates more change because the body feels safe enough to let go.
One important safety note: especially in the neck, deeper pressure is not always appropriate. The neck contains carotid arteries, jugular veins, lymphatic vessels, and major nerve pathways that are not meant for heavy compression. Excessive pressure in these areas is not only unnecessary, it can be unsafe. Proper neck work focuses on surrounding muscles and precise techniques rather than force.
My goal is to work with your body, not against it. When we focus on how your body responds, not how much pressure we use, that’s where real, lasting change happens.
