A properly fitting grazing muzzle should allow about a two-finger width of space around the entire circumference. If you notice rub marks on your horse's face, that is a sign that the muzzle is either the wrong shape or size for your horse or that it is being worn more than 10-12 hours a day. With fall grass carrying the same sugary risk as spring grass, be sure to keep your muzzles operational! Fly pressure is finally easing up, which makes this the smartest time of year to stock up for next season. All in-stock fly spray, fly control, and fly gear is 20 percent off right now. Buying ahead means you are ready to go the moment flies show back up next spring, and you get the savings while it lasts.

Did you know that fall grass can be just as risky as fresh spring grass, especially for metabolic or metabolic-prone horses and ponies? During the fall, grass still generates sugars from photosynthesis during the day, but the cold temperatures at night halt the growing process. Thus, the sugars and fructans continue to accumulate in the grass, making it a high-sugar snack. Similar management strategies that are employed during emerging spring grass are advised during the fall, especially for metabolic or metabolic-prone horses and ponies. This includes limited grazing turnout, muzzles, and dry-lot usage. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] with any questions.

Fall and spring are great times to run a f***l egg count on your horse. This simple test identifies your horse's individual parasite load and helps to pinpoint the high shedders in your herd. The results allow you to provide targeted deworming based on real data instead of a blanket deworming schedule. Testing is $24.99/f***l sample. If you are interested in having a f***l egg test done, contact the Mill store nearest you to arrange a time to drop off your sample.

We have already encountered some genuinely chilly nights! If you haven't already, be sure to pull out all your blankets and check them over carefully. If replacements or different sizes are needed, now is the time before plummeting temperatures have everyone scrambling.
