Nina Scott says the best part of her job is the talking. Clients settle into her chair at The Loyal Sparrow and, somewhere between the stencil and the first line, they tell her how they got there. A name. A date. A loss they finally want to carry on their skin instead of only in their head. Some of those stories are hard to sit with. She sits with them anyway.

That instinct, treating the person first and the art second, is a big part of why readers of Distinctly Montana voted The Loyal Sparrow the Best Tattoo Shop in Montana for 2026.

Owners Nina and Jimmy Scott have built a close-knit crew of artists and piercers across the Gallatin Valley who cover a lot of ground: custom tattoos of any size, walk-in flash, piercings, body modification, and permanent makeup. The studio stays sterile and professional and still feels like somewhere you’d want to linger. The nervous first-timer and the heavily inked regular get the same welcome.

The original shop sits on Main Street in downtown Belgrade, with a second studio on North 7th in Bozeman. Walk-ins are welcome Thursday through Monday for flash work, based on artist availability. Bigger pieces are worth booking ahead so an artist can plan it out with you.

With locations in Bozeman and Belgrade, Montana, Loyal Sparrow Tattoo Co. recently opened its third shop in Lake Havasu City. Tattooer Nina Scott, who co-owns the business with her husband and piercer, Jimmy, said Havasu’s location offers a range of services.

A grand opening event at the end of September introduced the shop to Havasu’s community. Scott said the shop’s eight stations will welcome resident artists, traveling artists from their Montana shops and guest artists.

Clients can expect walk-in tattooing, custom tattoos, luxury body jewelry and professional body piercing. Scott said the shop’s retail area offers apparel and accessories, including Sullen Clothing.

Not every piercing needs to take up a lot of real estate to make an impact.

The forward helix is tucked into a small area of cartilage near the front of the ear, making it perfect for tiny gems, simple jewelry or a carefully planned stack.

But anatomy comes first. Not every ear is built for the same placement—and a good piercer won't force it.
