Definition: Timely Progress Review (TPR)

A TPR is Social Security’s periodic check of whether a Ticket To Work participant is making the required progress toward employment and financial self-sufficiency through work, education, training or a combination of these activities. It generally occurs after approximately every 12 months of Ticket use. It is a review of vocational progress rather than a medical assessment of whether the person still has a disability.

SSA evaluates whether the participant has met the program’s “timely progress” requirements for the applicable review period. These are established benchmarks, and the requirements generally increase over successive review periods.

For example, for the first review, a participant can satisfy the requirements by doing any one of the following:
- Working for at least three months with earnings at or above the applicable Trial Work Level.
- Completing at least 60% of a full-time academic year’s course load in a qualifying college, technical, trade, or vocational program.
- Completing an accepted combination of work and education.
- Obtaining a GED or high school diploma.

The main consequence concerns protection from medical Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs), used by SSA to reassess whether someone continues to meet its medical disability requirements. Passing a TPR generally extends protection while failing a TPR removes that Ticket-based protection.

Depending on the job and employer, flexible work can take different forms. You might find opportunities that offer:

- Flexible start and end times.
- Part-time schedules.
- Alternative or compressed schedules.

The right arrangement depends on your abilities, health needs, career goals and the type of work you're pursuing. Understanding the options available can help you focus your job search on opportunities that fit your needs.
