The shop went quiet. The work didn’t.

I’ve watched a lot happen inside Integrity Tattoos over the years.

Lately, things have been a little quieter around here. At least on the outside.

Jason’s been recovering from injuries. There’s been pain, sleepless nights, and mornings when motivation doesn’t even bother showing up.

But the work?

The work keeps moving.

And for nearly a year now, I’ve watched these two stubborn bastards build a pirate leg sleeve, one session at a time.

Every week or two, Pete comes back.

They talk, plan, go through references. Jason draws something. Pete has another idea. Something gets moved, changed, or drawn all over again.

And then they get back to work.

An entire world of black and gray taking shape around Pete’s leg.

It’s not finished yet.

And that’s the point.

I’ve watched enough tattoos come together to know that the best work doesn’t always happen when everything is going right.

Sometimes it happens when you’re tired, hurting, frustrated, or just plain sick of everything.

You show up anyway.

Pete keeps showing up. Jason keeps building.

And somewhere between the drawings, the conversations, the hours in the chair, and the sound of those machines, another piece of this story gets written.

Motivation comes and goes.

Discipline is what keeps the ship moving.

And from what I’ve seen, neither of these old pirates is finished sailing yet.

Nothing on this arm stayed where it started.

I watched the lotus rise.

I watched the koi move through the water.

I watched dragons, waves, flowers, gates and old symbols slowly find their place around it.

Not all at once.

Nearly two years of coming back to Jason’s chair.

Adding something.
Changing something.
Finding the next piece.

That’s the strange thing about a sleeve like Stephen’s.

At some point you’re no longer watching individual tattoos being made.

You’re watching something become.

The water keeps moving.
The story keeps changing.
Stephen keeps coming back.

And Jason keeps building.

I’ve been around long enough to know that most worthwhile things look like chaos somewhere in the middle.

Keep moving anyway.

I’ve watched Jason and Micah since before either of them became tattooist.

I’ve watched a lot of people walk through these doors since then.

Thad is one of them.

Military veteran.
Retired police officer.

When Thad came to Jason, he wasn’t just carrying an unfinished tattoo.

He was carrying a bad experience.

Another shop had started the eagle and American flag cover-up on his arm. It wasn’t finished. And what was left behind wasn’t going to be easy to fix.

Jason took it on anyway.

I watched him work on it.

Session after session.

Figure out what could stay.
What had to change.
What could be saved.

No pretending the old work wasn’t there. It was there.

So you deal with it.

Somewhere along the way, though, this stopped being about fixing somebody else’s work.

It became about Thad.

The eagle.
The flag.
The dog tags.

His service. His family. The years he spent answering the call of duty.

There are easier tattoos to do.

So fu***ng what.

I’ve watched Jason put a lot of hours into this arm.

I’ve watched Thad come back and put his trust in him again.

That’s the part the finished photographs don’t show.

A tattoo like this isn’t built in an afternoon.

Neither is trust.

Thad carried the story through the door.

Jason put some of it into the skin.

I was here for the rest.

Sometimes growth begins by unlearning.

When Nick Marshall was asked what one of the hardest parts of advancing as an artist has been, his answer wasn’t learning another technique.

It was learning to let go of the things that no longer served him—both in tattooing and in life.

That answer tells you a lot about the artist behind the work.

Nick officially begins his next chapter with us November 3.

Nick’s work already crosses a wide range of tattooing. But increasingly, he’s drawn toward large-scale work that blurs the boundaries between dark art, biomechanical forms and psychedelia.

Nick doesn’t want specialization to become limitation. Every style teaches him something—about technique, composition, skin and how artwork survives the passage of time.

That’s something we’ve understood at Integrity Tattoos for more than two decades:

An artist needs more than a place to work.

They need an environment where they can experiment.
They need exposure to different ideas.
They need clients willing to trust them.
And sometimes, they simply need enough room to discover who they’re becoming.

Nick isn’t coming here to become another Integrity Tattoos artist…

He’s coming here to become Nick Marshall.

We’re simply giving him another place to find out what that means.

His books are now opening for November and beyond.

Take a look through his work and tell us:

Which direction would you like to see Nick push further—dark art, biomechanical, psychedelia, or something completely different?

Welcome to the next chapter, Nick.

Some things are better left unfinished… for now.

Emily’s spider lily project continues to grow.

Success has a remarkably ordinary beginning.

You show up.

Then you show up again.

Long before anyone calls it experience, a career, or success… it was simply the discipline to keep walking through the door.

Micah has spent nearly 30 years in the tattoo industry—starting as a body piercer, then shop manager, apprentice and tattoo artist.

Along the way came seminars, awards, publications and eventually, a clientele that has allowed him to build a life doing this.

But none of those things came first.

Showing up did.

Nearly three decades later, he still does.
