After years of pushing away trauma, I reached my breaking point.

So I drove to the Oregon Coast, alone, and rented a cabin for four days - no phone, no plan, no responsibilities...

And when the noise finally stopped, years of emotion finally had somewhere to go.

He didn’t come back with some perfect five-year plan. He came back feeling grounded in himself and clear about what he needed to do next.

That experience became the seed of what we now call a Solo Retreat.

Self-help is useful… until seeking another perspective becomes a way to avoid trusting your own. At some point, another book, podcast, framework, or expert just adds another voice to the pile.

One of the easiest ways to stay stuck is telling yourself:
“I should be grateful.”

-> You can be grateful for what you’ve built and still know it’s no longer right for you.

-> You can br proud of how far you’ve come and still feel something deeper asking to change.

Those are not contradictions.

A Solo Retreat is a deliberate change of environment, enough solitude to stop performing for everyone else, and enough structure to keep the time from turning into more scrolling and avoidance.

Stepping far enough outside of it to see it more clearly.

The hardest kind of misalignment to notice is the kind where everything still “works” from an outside perspective. You’re productive, responsible, and getting things done… but it just doesn’t feel fulfilling anymore.

Pushing harder won’t help - it’ll only dig you deeper into this hole. The answer is to step back long enough to figure out whether the direction still feels like yours.

Productivity culture can teach us to override our inner voice in the name of productivity, responsibility, and achievement...

“I don’t want this.”
“Something feels off.”

The more we push these thoughts away, the less attuned we become to this inner compass we all have.

But it's still there - you need enough quiet to finally hear the whisper that’s already there.

When something feels off, our instinct is usually to add something.

But at a certain point, more input doesn’t create clarity - it just crowds it out.

The answers we’re searching for are often already within us.

We just need enough space to actually hear them.

Until we deliberately take space away from our modern lives, all that noise can drown out our own inner voice.

At a certain point, more advice or information doesn’t help... it just makes it harder to hear yourself.

Sometimes the best signal is no signal.

The people responsible for making some of the highest-consequence decisions in our companies, communities, and society are often the people with the least uninterrupted bandwidth to clearly think those decisions through.

And that’s sort of the cultural perception we’re trying to shift with our Solo Retreat Movement:

Stepping away from our day-to-day routines, expectations, and obligations… that’s not us trying to “escape” or slack off in some way.

For those of us whose work depends on judgment, strategy, creativity, and original thought, stepping away is actually the highest-leverage part of the work.

Stillness can feel extremely uncomfortable at times.

But most deep thinking happens when there’s finally enough space for the noise to settle.

Maybe the thing we’re avoiding isn’t boredom...
Maybe it’s what we might hear when there’s finally nothing left to distract us.
