One activity. So many skills. All with a purpose! ๐Ÿ’™

During Augieโ€™s PT session, Mrs. Karson created an obstacle course with a weighted backpack to target multiple areas of development in one fun, functional activity!

By navigating different compliant and non-compliant surfaces, Augie is working on motor planning, balance, coordination, and increased sensory input through his feet to support improved foot positioning. The added weight provides another opportunity to challenge his body and build skills needed for everyday movement.

But itโ€™s about more than completing an obstacle course! These skills carry over into functional activities like walking on different surfaces, navigating his environment, managing changes in terrain, and participating more independently in everyday routines.

This is what purposeful, play-based therapy looks like: building meaningful skills through activities that help children participate more confidently in their everyday lives. ๐Ÿ’™

A Very Special Patient Spotlight: Palmer! ๐Ÿ’™

Todayโ€™s patient spotlight is extra special because we get to shine the spotlight on Palmer, the youngest daughter of our very own Mr. Noah, the owner of Inclusionary Therapy! ๐Ÿ’™

Palmer has been working with Mrs. Karson in Physical Therapy to build her skills with crawling and, more recently, walking! Watching her grow, work hard, and reach these exciting milestones has been such a joy for our entire team.

Inclusionary was built on a passion for helping individuals reach their fullest potential, and getting to watch that mission come to life for someone so close to our Inclusionary family makes these moments even more meaningful. We know how much love, hard work, and dedication go into every little milestone, and we couldnโ€™t be prouder of Palmer and all the progress she is making!

Palmer, you are so loved by your Inclusionary family, and we are so thankful we get to be part of your journey. We sure do love when you come through our doors! ๐Ÿ’™

OT Graduation: Zeke! ๐Ÿ’™

Zeke and Mr. Noah have been working together for the past 3 years, building skills in sensory and emotional regulation, age-appropriate fine motor skills, and so much more! Throughout their time together, theyโ€™ve developed a very special bond that makes this graduation extra bittersweet. ๐Ÿฅน

We are so proud of Zeke and all he has accomplished! While we are excited to see him continue to grow and thrive, we know these two will miss each other so much! Thank you, Zeke, for making the past 3 years so special! ๐Ÿ’™

Help us celebrate Zeke and this exciting milestone! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ‘

AAC Fact of the Week: You donโ€™t have to ask a question to model language!

Fact: AAC users benefit from seeing their communication device used for more than answering questions or requesting items.

When we model AAC during everyday activities, we show that communication can be used for so much more, including commenting, protesting, asking questions, sharing opinions, and connecting with others.

Try this: During play, model words like โ€œThatโ€™s funny,โ€ โ€œI like it,โ€ โ€œNot that one,โ€ or โ€œLook at that!โ€ on your childโ€™s AAC device without expecting them to imitate you.

Remember: AAC is about connection, not just getting needs met. We want to support communicators in expressing their full range of thoughts, feelings, and ideas.

We thought weโ€™d celebrate by sharing a few of his most iconic habits, sayings, and Noah-isms. All jokes aside, weโ€™re thankful for a boss who supports our team, trusts us to do what we do best, and creates a work environment where we feel valued, supported, and genuinely enjoy coming to work.

We might roast you a little, Noah, but we wouldnโ€™t trade you! Thanks for everything you do for Inclusionary Therapyโ€ฆ even the things that make us question our sanity. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Happy National Boss's Day to Noah!

From therapy sessions to billing, HR, and everything in between, Noah wears a lot of hats at Inclusionary Therapy! More importantly, he has helped build a clinic where individuals of all ages and abilities can feel supported, included, and celebrated.

We are thankful for the vision, hard work, and heart he brings to Inclusionary every day. He has created not only a place where the families we serve can thrive, but also a positive work environment where our team can grow, collaborate, laugh, and feel supported.

Thank you for the countless things you do behind the scenes, for investing in your team, and for making Inclusionary what it is today. We appreciate you, Noah! ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’™ Speech Therapy Graduation: Crue!

Help us celebrate Crue, who is 3 years old and has been working with Mrs. Hannah for the past 6 months!

When Crue first started speech therapy, he was minimally speaking. Over the past 6 months, he has made incredible progress in his communication skills and is now communicating so well and demonstrating an understanding of so many age-appropriate concepts!

Mrs. Hannah and Crue have built such a special bond over the past 6 months. Their sessions have been filled with so much fun, laughter, and learning, making this graduation extra bittersweet! While they are both going to miss seeing each other, we are so excited to celebrate how far Crue has come.

Crue, we are SO proud of you and can't wait to see all the amazing things you continue to do! Congratulations on your speech graduation! ๐Ÿ’™

What does inclusion really mean?๐Ÿ’™

Inclusion is more than inviting everyone into the room. It's making sure everyone has the opportunity, support, and accommodations they need to participate and feel that they belong.

Equality gives everyone the same thing. Equity recognizes that everyone may need something different.

Sometimes inclusion looks like an AAC device. Sometimes it looks like a sensory break, an adapted activity, extra processing time, or simply being willing to do things differently.

At Inclusionary Therapy, we believe that differences should be understood and supportedโ€”not treated as barriers to belonging.

Because fair doesn't always mean the same, and inclusion means making room for everyone. ๐Ÿ’™

GOAL MET! โœ๏ธ๐Ÿ’™

Kendra and Abel have been working hard in occupational therapy on their handwriting skills, and we are so excited to celebrate a BIG accomplishment! ๐ŸŽ‰ Both friends independently wrote their names! We are so proud of the time, effort, and practice they have put into reaching this goal!

Did you know that handwriting supports so much more than just writing letters? โœ๏ธ Handwriting helps develop:

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Fine motor skills โ€“ strengthening the small muscles in the hands and fingers.
๐Ÿ‘€ Visual-motor integration โ€“ coordinating what the eyes see with how the hands move.
๐Ÿง  Motor planning and coordination โ€“ planning and carrying out the movements needed to form letters.
๐ŸŽฏ Attention and focus โ€“ staying engaged and following the steps of a task.
๐Ÿ“š Early literacy skills โ€“ building letter recognition, letter formation, and connections between letters and language.
๐Ÿ’ช Independence and confidence โ€“ developing skills for everyday activities at home, school, and beyond!

Writing their names is about so much more than putting letters on paper. It is a meaningful step toward greater independence, confidence, and participation in everyday life!

Way to go, Kendra and Abel! Keep up the amazing work! ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ’ฌ AAC FACT OF THE WEEK: AAC DOES NOT PREVENT SPEECH! ๐Ÿ’™

One common misconception about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is that using a communication device, picture board, or signs will prevent someone from learning to speak. Research does not support this myth!

What does the research say?

A 2006 research review by Millar, Light, and Schlosser found that 89% of the cases in their more rigorous analysis showed gains in speech production following AAC intervention. A 2021 systematic review also found that AAC did not hinder speech development in autistic individuals with complex communication needs.

Why does this matter?

AAC provides a way to communicate right now while supporting language development. It can include speech-generating devices, picture boards, signs, and gestures, and can be used alongside spoken language.

The takeaway: We should never make someone wait for speech before giving them access to communication!

At Inclusionary Therapy, we support communication via high tech AAC, sign, and/or verbal language. Every person deserves a way to express themselves, connect with others, and have their voice heard! ๐Ÿ’™
