I tend to highlight this herb every year around this time, but it is such a great, gentle plant to use I think everyone should know a bit about it.
Elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has traditionally been used to support the body during colds and mild upper-respiratory discomfort. Elderflower preparations are traditionally recognized for relieving early cold symptoms. Tinctures, syrups & teas are a few of the way to use this wonderful herb.
Elderflower has a long history of traditional use for mild upper-respiratory irritation and helping loosen respiratory discomfort. It is traditionally used as a diaphoretic (an herb that encourages gentle sweating) during feverish colds and chills.
Important preparation note: Use only properly identified, thoroughly cooked elderberries. Raw or unripe berries, leaves, stems, and bark may contain toxic compounds and can cause nausea, vomiting, or abdominal cramps. Elderberry supplements may also interact with medications, so consult a qualified healthcare professional—especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, chronic illness, or prescription-drug use.
