The average woman with endometriosis sees eight doctors over ten years before anyone names it.
Dr. Iris Kerin Orbuch says the reason is painful and simple, women are not believed. The signs often start in childhood, long before a first period, and family history carries real weight, if even an aunt has endo, a girl is very likely to have it too.
Scans often come back normal, so outdated training tells patients they are fine, when a careful history and exam say otherwise. And if surgery is needed, she is blunt, you want a specialist doing excision, not a generalist.
A normal scan does not mean nothing is wrong. It often means no one looked properly.
