💀 MYTH: “The specific diagnosis doesn’t matter—just tell me where it hurts and give me some exercises.”
Pain is complex, and we should never reduce a person to an MRI finding or scary anatomical label—but diagnosis still matters. A 2026 JOSPT editorial argues that an appropriately communicated pathoanatomical diagnosis can provide valuable information about prognosis, expected physiological responses, precautions, and the most appropriate treatment plan. The goal isn’t to tell someone they are “damaged”; it’s to explain what we believe is happening, acknowledge uncertainty when it exists, and pair that diagnosis with positive, evidence-based education that avoids a nocebo effect. At North 40 Physical Therapy, we don’t just treat “shoulder pain,” “knee pain,” or “back pain.” We use a comprehensive examination to understand the likely tissue, physiology, pain mechanism, and functional limitations involved, so we can provide more precise education, set realistic expectations, and select treatment that matches the individual. That is what separates the clinicians at North 40 PT apart from being entry-level and makes them master clinicians. A diagnosis shouldn’t create fear—it should create understanding and direction.
