Testosterone got lumped in with the steroid era, and its reputation never fully recovered.
When pro athletes were bulking up and breaking records, testosterone got pulled into the same conversation. In 1990, Congress passed the Anabolic Steroid Control Act, and testosterone became a Schedule III controlled substance. It still is today.
But here’s the difference. Medical testosterone is bioidentical, meaning it’s the same molecule your body makes. Much of the steroid scandal involved designer molecules built to boost muscle and dodge drug tests, often taken at extreme doses.
Hormone therapy is about restoring normal levels, with bloodwork to guide it. That’s a very different thing.
Hear Dr. Appell, Dr. Sorrell, and Tony Kurre break it down on The Appell and Sorrell Wellness Podcast. Full episode linked in our bio.
