It’s a liquid plant wax, extracted from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, a hardy evergreen shrub native to the deserts of North America.

🦬🍂 THE BISON KNOWS WHEN AUTUMN ARRIVES…

Long before calendars marked the changing seasons, the bison knew.

As the cottonwoods turn golden along the Missouri River and the prairie grasses fade to amber, something remarkable is happening across the grasslands.

The bison are preparing for winter.

Their thick winter coats begin filling in, growing denser as temperatures fall. They continue grazing on the prairie grasses, building and maintaining the reserves that will help sustain them through the bitter months ahead.

Unlike many animals, bison don’t retreat from winter.

They are remarkably adapted to endure it.

Their massive shoulders, thick hides, and woolly coats help them withstand the cold. Even when the snow begins to fly, they’ll sweep their powerful heads through it to uncover the grasses beneath.

And along the Missouri River, Indigenous peoples understood these seasonal rhythms long before modern settlement.

For generations, bison provided food, hides for warmth and shelter, and materials for tools and everyday life. Their seasonal movements were deeply intertwined with the lives of the Plains peoples.

There is something humbling about an animal so perfectly suited to the land it calls home.
