We couldn’t do this without our amazing community partners.

To the people across the New River Valley who listen, make connections, and help neighbors find their next step: thank you. Prevention and community care take all of us.

With gratitude to: NRV CARES; New River Community Action; New River Valley Regional Commission; NRV Recovery Ecosystem; NRV Lived Experience Network; Montgomery County Prevention Partners; New River Valley Community Services (NRVCS); Community Health Center of the New River Valley; Floyd County Multi-Disciplinary Team; Giles Youth-Adult Partnership; Pulaski Community Partners Coalition; Radford Youth-Adult Partnership; New River Health District; InStill Mindfulness; Rise Above; 401 Peer Center; New River Community College Student Resources; Virginia Tech Recovery Community.

And to our school counselors, educators, nurses, families, peer supporters, and local organizations who keep showing up: you matter in this work, too.

Reach out to local partners when you or someone you care about needs support. They can help you explore resources or connect with the right place to start.

One question I keep coming back to: does every student have someone they can turn to?

CDC describes school connectedness as feeling cared for, valued, and supported by adults and peers at school. Students who feel connected are less likely to report substance use and poor mental health.

We can help build that connection in ordinary moments: learning a name, noticing an absence, making room at lunch, or following up when something seems off.

Today, try one real check-in. Listen long enough for the answer.

Our five local prevention coalitions connect people around community wellbeing: Floyd County Multi-Disciplinary Team, Giles Youth-Adult Partnership, Montgomery County Prevention Partners, Pulaski Community Partners Coalition, and Radford Youth-Adult Partnership. NRVCS can help you connect with the coalition in your area.

A conversation can be a place to begin.

Check in. Make room for an honest answer. Help someone find their next step. Those small moments are part of how we show up for young people during Red Ribbon Week—and throughout the year.

Red Ribbon Week is here, and I’m grateful to spend this week with the students and staff at Blacksburg High School, including speaking at Friday’s assemblies.

Observed nationally October 23–31, Red Ribbon Week brings schools, families, and communities together around substance-use prevention. This year’s official theme is “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.”

For me, showing up means making room for honest questions, sharing something students can actually use, and helping people find support. That work belongs in every school, every week.

We’ve put quick practices and local resources in one place: https://www.therecenternrv.com/teen-resources

What helps young people feel supported in your school or community?

Thank you to NRV CARES, New River Community Action, and our local prevention coalitions for the care you bring to young people and families.

Watch how someone treats the receptionist on their way into an interview. Watch how an executive speaks to the server at a business dinner, the facilities worker emptying the trash bin late in the evening, or the junior coordinator struggling with a projector at the start of an all-hands meeting.
