It’s time we changed the way society has started to see yoga. The popularity of yoga in the mainstream, westernized fitness spaces has watered down the true meaning of what it is, causing us to start believing that being good at yoga was about how deeply we could twist, how far we could stretch, or how advanced a pose we could achieve.
Yoga is a philosophy, a daily spiritual and energetic maintenance practice, an entire lifestyle. It is a way of living. The word "yoga" in Sanskrit literally means "to yoke", or "union" — the connection of body, mind, and spirit, & the connection of the individual self to the Higher Self, or Universal Divine Consciousness. And so the practice extends far beyond what we do on a mat. While the physical portions of the practice have many benefits such as improving flexibility and supporting our physical health, yoga goes so much deeper than the body:
✨ It’s the study of the mind and understanding our thoughts and patterns.
✨ It’s living by the Yamas and Niyamas — ethical principles that guide how we move about in the world, how we treat ourselves and others.
✨ It’s learning concentration, mindfulness, meditation, and conscious breathing.
✨ It’s cultivating patience, compassion, self-awareness, and inner peace.
✨ It’s learning to respond consciously rather than react, and bring greater steadiness & awareness into our everyday lives.
This is why yoga isn't something you have to be good at. It isn't how advanced your practice looks. Bc only a small portion of your practice can even be seen from the outside. It is more about what is happening inside. It's how your practice is changing the way you live. And it is a constant, ongoing practice. It's not something one finally perfects one day.
Are you becoming more patient? More compassionate? More aware? Are you more able to find steadiness in difficult moments? To not let the constant fluctuations of the thoughts, emotions, & mind control you? Are you becoming more aware of and in tune with your body, it's needs, and what it's trying to tell you?
THAT is the practice. ❤️
You don't need to be flexible, strong, young, or experienced. You don't need to touch your toes or put your legs behind your head. If you can breathe, you can begin practicing yoga. You don't have to change your body to belong in yoga. Yoga is an opportunity to transform your relationship with your body, your mind, yourself, and the world around you.
Let's shift the focus from what yoga looks like to what yoga makes possible in our lives. Let's bring yoga back to its deeper roots and remember that the mat isn't the destination — it's where we practice for life 🧘🏼♀️♾️🌏💫
