At any moment, all the sugar in your blood adds up to about 4 grams, roughly one teaspoon. A 12-ounce soda has about 39 grams of sugar, nearly ten teaspoons.
Your body has to clear that extra sugar quickly. About half of it is glucose, which insulin moves into your cells and storage. The other half, fructose, goes mostly to your liver. Diets heavy in sugary drinks are linked to insulin resistance, which often shows up in insulin long before blood sugar looks off on a standard test. That's why a normal blood sugar on your yearly physical doesn't tell the whole story.
