Darker skin doesn’t mean no lasers. It means smarter lasers. When treating skin of color, the question isn’t simply “Can we laser?” It’s:
Which laser? Which wavelength? Which settings? And how do we prepare the skin?
For patients at higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, I may prep the skin beforehand with a carefully selected regimen that can include a retinoid and hydroquinone-when appropriate-to optimize the skin before treatment.
Then comes the part that matters just as much: choosing the right device and customizing the settings for that individual skin type.
Because all lasers are NOT the same. And the same laser settings should not be used on every skin tone.
Skin of color can be treated beautifully with energy-based devices—but it requires an understanding of melanin, wavelength, heat, treatment depth, and the individual patient’s tendency to pigment.
The goal isn’t to be afraid of treating darker skin.
It’s to respect the biology enough to treat it intelligently.
Save this if you’ve ever been told your skin is “too dark for lasers.” 💚
