The sugar craving started earlier...⁣
⁣
You’re trying to lose weight after 40, but by lunchtime you have already made a thousand decisions.⁣
⁣
You open the refrigerator. Nothing sounds easy. You are hungry, tired of thinking about food, and tempted to grab whatever takes the least effort.⁣
⁣
Then the afternoon hits.⁣
⁣
Your energy drops. You start searching for something sweet. By evening, it feels like you cannot stop thinking about chocolate, so you blame yourself and promise to make better choices tomorrow.⁣
⁣
The pattern often begins before you reach for the cookie.⁣
⁣
It can begin hours earlier when decision fatigue leaves you skipping a meal, picking at whatever is nearby, or eating something without enough protein, fiber, or total food.⁣
⁣
This is why I keep a simple meal structure ready:⁣
⁣
🍗 Protein ⁣
🍠 A carb with fiber ⁣
🧀 A little fat ⁣
🥣 Flavor I enjoy ⁣
⁣
I love my Cheddar BBQ chicken sweet potato:⁣
⁣
• 150g chicken breast ⁣
• 150g baked sweet potato ⁣
• 14g shredded cheddar ⁣
• 11g Ray’s barbecue sauce ⁣
⁣
Approximately 426 calories, 54g protein, 32g carbs, 9g fat, and 6g fiber.⁣
⁣
No complicated recipe. No carb-free rules. No standing in front of the refrigerator hoping a meal appears.⁣
⁣
You can also change the flavor without rebuilding the entire meal.⁣
⁣
Use the chicken in a taco bowl. Add an apple if you do not have sweet potato ready. Turn it into a BBQ chicken wrap or taco wrap when you need something portable.⁣
⁣
The structure stays familiar, which means your tired brain has fewer decisions to make.⁣
⁣
When your meals include enough protein, fiber, carbs, fat, and total food, you are giving yourself a steadier place to begin. That can help reduce the energy dips, urgent hunger, and loud sugar cravings that make the day feel like a roller coaster.⁣
⁣
You do not have to eat this exact meal.⁣
⁣
You need a few easy combinations you can make even when your brain is tired and you do not want to make one more decision.⁣
⁣
Save this meal formula for the next time you open the refrigerator and have no idea what to eat.⁣
⁣
Follow Dana Cushing Health for practical support with sugar cravings and weight loss after 40. 💜

My cravings kept getting louder...⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
You eat healthy all day because you’re trying to lose weight.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Then 3 p.m. arrives, and you dive into the pantry looking for chocolate.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Or supper is over, nothing feels satisfying, and there you are with your fork in the ice cream.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
The harder I tried not to eat chocolate, the louder it became.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Cookies. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Chocolate chips. Suddenly, the entire pantry knew my name.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
My answer used to be more restriction.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
No sugar. Fewer carbs. Tighter rules. Another promise to do better tomorrow.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
None of that helped me understand why my sugar monster kept getting so loud.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Eventually, I stopped focusing only on the chocolate and started looking at the pattern surrounding the craving.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
The craving was the moment I noticed, but my pattern started hours earlier.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Before you blame dessert or cut out carbs again, save these three questions:⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
1. What did I eat earlier?⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Did breakfast and lunch include enough protein, carbs, fiber, fat, and total food to leave me satisfied?⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
2. How long has it been since I ate?⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
A long gap can turn a desire for something sweet into an urgent search through the pantry.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
3. What happened before the craving became loud?⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Were you hungry, tired, stressed, bored, overwhelmed, or finally sitting down after taking care of everyone else?⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
Feeling exhausted, irritable, foggy, and pulled toward sugar can feel like a blood-sugar roller coaster. Those experiences have many possible causes and do not tell us whether blood glucose is high or low. They are clues to notice, not a diagnosis.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
As an RN and weight-loss coach, I want women over 40 to understand the complete pattern instead of fearing one cookie, one bowl of ice cream, or every carb on the plate.⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
You can learn to include carbs and treats while working toward weight loss and supporting your blood-sugar health. Start by noticing the pattern and deciding what deserves your attention first.⁣ ⁣

I need to get this off of my chest...⁣
⁣
I am so tired of the food and hormone fight we scroll through every day while we are trying to get healthy, lose or maintain weight, and feel stronger.⁣
⁣
If you are a woman over 40 trying to sort through all of it, you probably know exactly what I mean.⁣
⁣
A coaching friend recently asked me, “Where have you been? I missed seeing you.”⁣
⁣
The exhausted feeling is real and keeping me from posting⁣
⁣
I know she is exhausted too.⁣
⁣
Those of us creating health content are listening to the same messaging. Sometimes, the calmer messages get drowned out by the chaos that creates clicks.⁣
⁣
Then Utah gave me a scenic excuse to stay away from the post button a little longer.⁣
⁣
The mountains were quiet enough that I could hear my own voice again.⁣
⁣
What feels louder than ever is how much women over 40 are hurting.⁣
⁣
They feel like they are eating healthy. They exercise and try so hard, but they still cannot lose weight.⁣
⁣
Their “sugar monster” feels out of control, so they cut out sugar and carbs. The restriction gets tighter, the cravings get louder, and eventually they eat more than they intended.⁣
⁣
Then guilt takes over and Monday becomes another restart.⁣
⁣
What helps you get healthy/lose weight is not exciting. ⁣
⁣
Build balanced meals. Eat enough protein and fiber. Learn the portions that support your goals. Slow down long enough to recognize the eating pattern that may be making your cravings louder or stalling your weight loss. Then decide which small change matters first.⁣
⁣
Simple does not always mean easy, but this is how you stop letting every food decision send you back to the beginning.⁣
⁣
After 28 years as a Registered Nurse, I do not want to add another loud rule to your feed. I want to help you turn down the noise, understand your eating pattern, quiet your sugar cravings, support your weight loss goals, and begin trusting yourself around food again.⁣
⁣
If that is the conversation you need, follow along and stay awhile.⁣
⁣
Nodding your head? Tap the heart and share this with a friend so more women over 40 can find this conversation too.⁣
⁣
💜 xx, ⁣
Dana

When every storm means Monday…⁣
⁣
South Dakota and Iowa have had plenty of rain, you too?⁣
⁣
This weekend, my friend Andrea and I woke up at 5:45 to walk before a six-hour drive home. It was raining, we were tired, and staying inside would have been easier.⁣
⁣
We put on our shoes and walked anyway.⁣
⁣
That does not mean everyone needs to walk five and a half miles in the rain. It reminded me that health routines cannot depend on every day being sunny, convenient, and perfectly planned.⁣
⁣
The same thing happens with food.⁣
⁣
You make a plan on Sunday. Then work becomes stressful, someone gets sick, dinner changes, you travel, or you eat more than you intended.⁣
⁣
Suddenly, your brain declares the week ruined and promises another diet restart on Monday.⁣
⁣
A routine that only works when life is sunny will keep sending you back to the beginning.⁣
⁣
Sustainable weight loss after 40 requires routines that can bend when the forecast changes.⁣
⁣
Maybe the planned workout becomes ten minutes of stretching.⁣
⁣
Maybe the dinner you intended to cook becomes a simple meal from the freezer.⁣
⁣
Maybe you eat the wedding mints, enjoy them, notice what might support you differently next time, and continue without guilt.⁣
⁣
Flexible does not mean careless. It means you know which actions matter most, even when you cannot do everything you planned.⁣
⁣
This is where many women think they need more control.⁣
⁣
They try to control the food, the schedule, the scale, and every unexpected event. When life refuses to cooperate, they assume they need stricter rules.⁣
⁣
What they need is a structure they can trust when life changes.⁣
⁣
That is the work behind Diet Different™. We build meals, movement, and routines for rainy days, not only the weeks when motivation is high and the calendar behaves.⁣
⁣
Your progress is not measured by how perfectly you avoid every storm. It is built each time you adjust, make one supportive choice, and refuse to turn an imperfect day into another Monday restart.⁣
⁣
The rain will come.⁣
⁣
Your routine can still hold you.⁣

Your taste buds can change…⁣
⁣
I’m sitting outside Walmart drinking one of my favorite coffee orders: a venti Americano, sometimes with an extra shot.⁣
⁣
Years ago, I would have ordered a full-strength white chocolate mocha.⁣
⁣
There is nothing bad about that drink. It brought a lot of sugar and carbohydrates into my day, and I noticed I did not feel my best afterward.⁣
⁣
Then I swung completely in the other direction and cut out all the sugar.⁣
⁣
I went from eating all the sugar, to avoiding it, to finding a middle ground that supports my health without making food and drinks feel forbidden.⁣
⁣
Today, I can enjoy an Americano or a skinny vanilla latte, and it tastes sweet enough to me. My taste buds and expectations have changed.⁣
⁣
If you try a lower-sugar drink and think, “That isn’t sweet enough,” consider what your taste buds have been practicing.⁣
⁣
When you regularly choose intensely sweet foods and drinks, that sweetness can become what you expect. Restaurant meals can do something similar with salt and fat. Food at home may taste bland in comparison.⁣
⁣
That does not mean you must eliminate everything you enjoy.⁣
⁣
You can gradually challenge your taste buds. Try one less pump of syrup. Mix sweetened and unsweetened yogurt. Give your preferences time to adjust instead of deciding after one sip that change is impossible.⁣
⁣
This is part of learning how to Diet Different™.⁣
⁣
Weight loss after 40 does not require a life without coffee, carbohydrates, restaurant meals, or favorite foods. Get curious about your choices, how they make you feel, and whether another portion or version could support your goals and still satisfy you.⁣
⁣
I’m heading into Walmart to grab protein-forward staples from my Diet Different™ Costco and Walmart Grocery Guide.⁣
⁣
Satisfying protein gives you more flexibility for carbohydrates, treats, and meals you enjoy. It can help you stop bouncing between restriction and overindulgence on the diet hamster wheel.⁣

The carb I added….⁣
⁣
In my last Reel, I showed you the leftover hamburger bowl I ate for breakfast. It gave me satisfying protein, but I did not have a carbohydrate ready.⁣
⁣
I told you I would figure it out, and I did.⁣
⁣
Leftover squash soup became my carb. I could have spooned it over the hamburger, eaten it on the side, or enjoyed it later.⁣
⁣
We eat hamburgers with french fries or sweet potatoes, right? Squash is another starchy carbohydrate, even when it shows up as soup.⁣
⁣
Breakfast does not have to look like breakfast. ⁣
⁣
The pressure to make every meal perfect can make feeding yourself harder. It also reinforces the black-and-white thinking that follows women into weight loss after 40.⁣
⁣
This food is good. That food is bad. I ate well today, but I was bad this weekend. One choice convinces me I fell off my diet again.⁣
⁣
There is a space in the middle where food does not determine whether you are good, bad, healthy, or unhealthy.⁣
⁣
I call it your 5-7. ⁣
⁣
Imagine a peace and satisfaction scale from 0-10. ⁣
⁣
At the extremes, food may feel chaotic or overly controlled. ⁣
⁣
Your 5-7 is where you feel nourished and satisfied without needing every choice to be perfect.⁣
⁣
You can eat a hamburger bowl for breakfast, add squash soup later, enjoy both, and continue with your day.⁣
⁣
When you never feel satisfied in your brain, belly, and heart, continuing the habits that support your physical goals becomes harder.⁣
⁣
You do not have to choose between eating carbs and losing weight. Include them in portions and combinations that support your body and goals.⁣
⁣
That is the heart of Diet Different™. Food flexibility gives you more choices and helps you move beyond all-or-nothing thinking.⁣
⁣
Today, squash soup was my carb. Tomorrow, it may be fruit, rice, potatoes, bread, or chips. The goal is knowing carbs can stay on your plate during weight loss after 40.⁣
⁣
Follow along for food-flexibility tips to turn down the nutrition noise, find your 5-7, and step off the diet hamster wheel. 💜

Breakfast could be easier…⁣
⁣
If figuring out what to eat for breakfast is driving you crazy, eat the leftovers.⁣
⁣
This morning, I warmed up leftover ground beef & added 🍅, 🥒, &mustard. It took about 30 seconds to warm the meat and a few more to finish the bowl.⁣
⁣
Was it a picture-perfect breakfast? No, but it gave me satisfying protein without spending twenty minutes deciding what I was supposed to eat. ⁣
⁣
This will also help you stay out of the Starbucks drive-through.⁣
⁣
I didn’t have a carb planned, but that was not a reason to skip breakfast or panic about the perfect plate. I could add an apple, frozen fruit, chips, or another carbohydrate later.⁣
⁣
What carb did I add?⁣
🫐Berries ⁣
🥔Chips⁣
🍎Apple⁣
🎃Squash soup⁣
Drop a 🫐, 🥔,🍎, or🎃⁣
⁣
One meal does not need to provide everything your body needs for the entire day.⁣
⁣
What you see on someone’s plate is not necessarily everything they are eating.⁣
⁣
Social media can make nutrition feel far more complicated than it needs to be. ⁣
⁣
You see someone’s beautiful breakfast bowl and wonder whether your leftovers are healthy enough. You hear that breakfast must include certain foods or every meal must look perfectly balanced.⁣
⁣
Suddenly, feeding yourself becomes another decision you have to get right.⁣
⁣
For sustainable weight loss after 40, the meal you can make & eat will support you far better than the “perfect” high-protein breakfast you never prepare.⁣
⁣
Start with what you have. Choose a satisfying protein. Add a carbohydrate, fruit, vegetable, or fat based on what is available and what will help satisfy you. Then keep moving forward.⁣
⁣
Breakfast can be leftover Subway, a burger bowl, last night’s chicken and rice, or any food you enjoy. Food flexibility helps you build balanced meals without turning every choice into a test.⁣
⁣
That is what it means to Diet Different™. Let’s stop overcomplicating food, turn down the noise about what everyone says you should be doing, and listen to what works for your body, schedule, and goals.⁣
⁣
Your voice has been drowned out for too long.⁣
⁣
Follow along for food-flexibility tips to move beyond all-or-nothing thinking and step off the diet hamster wheel-you are dizzy and it’s time to get off!💜

Before you work harder…⁣
⁣
You may have heard, “You cannot out-exercise a poor diet.”⁣
⁣
I would say it a little differently.⁣
⁣
Exercise is incredibly important for your heart, bones, muscles, energy, mood, blood sugar balance, and long-term health. ⁣
⁣
Strength training becomes especially valuable for women navigating perimenopause and weight loss after 40.⁣
⁣
Exercise can support weight loss, too, but movement and meals have different jobs.⁣
⁣
Exercise helps you build and protect muscle, improve your fitness, and support your metabolic health.⁣
⁣
Your daily meals give you more direct control over the calories you consume, whether you feel satisfied, and whether you arrive at 3 p.m. ready to climb inside a bag of chocolate chips.⁣
⁣
This is why I would start with food first.⁣
⁣
That does not mean controlling every bite, following another restrictive plan, or giving up the foods you enjoy.⁣
⁣
It means getting curious about what is happening throughout your day and finding the simplest place to begin.⁣
⁣
Before you add another workout or decide you need to work harder, ask⁣
⁣
1. How many meals can I eat at home this week, where I can see the portions and ingredients more clearly?⁣
⁣
2. Which meal can I put on repeat instead of saving another Facebook recipe to my camera roll that I will probably never make?⁣
⁣
3. Where can I add a satisfying source of protein from food I already enjoy instead of chasing the next protein cereal or protein Pop-Tart?⁣
⁣
4. Am I eating protein, carbohydrates, fat, and enough total food earlier in the day, or is an underfed morning sending me face-first into a bag of chocolate chips at 3 p.m.?⁣
⁣
5. What is the one action most likely to move me forward today?⁣
⁣
As a Registered Nurse and weight-loss coach, I want women to understand that controlling the controllables does not require controlling everything.⁣
⁣
Think of exercise as the icing on the cake. It adds tremendous value, but we still need the cake.⁣
⁣
Getting healthy and losing weight is not always easy, but your next step can be simple.⁣
⁣
If you are exhausted from working so hard on your h

The diet hamster wheel...⁣
⁣
You cut carbohydrates because you want to feel more in control of your health and weight loss after 40.⁣
⁣
Then bread becomes “bad,” dessert requires a reason, and one unplanned food makes the whole day feel ruined.⁣
⁣
Your sugar cravings get louder.⁣
⁣
You eat more than you intended, feel guilty, and promise yourself that Monday will be different.⁣
⁣
That is the diet hamster wheel:⁣
⁣
RESTRICT → STRESS → LOUDER CRAVINGS → OVERINDULGE → GUILT → RESTART⁣
⁣
Why can cravings feel stronger after cutting carbohydrates?⁣
⁣
Physical hunger may be part of it, especially if your meals have not included enough protein, carbohydrates, fat, fiber, or total food.⁣
⁣
Restriction can also make the food you declared off-limits take up more space in your mind.⁣
⁣
Stress, fatigue, habit, and the desire for comfort may be part of the pattern too.⁣
⁣
I understand because I lived it.⁣
⁣
I followed keto, feared sugar, removed carbohydrates from my home, and once taught women to fear many of the same foods.⁣
⁣
In 2022, I brought carbohydrates back and learned that carbs and weight loss could coexist.⁣
⁣
The next time you want to restart, pause before creating another list of rules.⁣
⁣
Ask yourself:⁣
⁣
Am I physically hungry?⁣
⁣
Did I eat enough earlier today?⁣
⁣
Am I tired, stressed, bored, or overwhelmed?⁣
⁣
Did this food feel more powerful because I told myself I could not have it?⁣
⁣
What would support me right now?⁣
⁣
You are responding with awareness instead of letting one moment decide the rest of your day.⁣
⁣
Curiosity gives you information you can use.⁣
⁣
Criticism usually sends you around the wheel again.⁣
⁣
As a Registered Nurse with 25 years in women’s health, I know sustainable midlife weight loss does not require fearing carbohydrates.⁣
⁣
You do not have to choose between eating carbs and losing weight.⁣
⁣
You can learn how to eat them with confidence instead of guilt.⁣
⁣
If you are exhausted from working so hard on your health and weight-loss goals without moving forward, follow along.⁣

Before another Monday...⁣
⁣
Enrollment for my 21-day Weight Loss After 40, Carbs Included Challenge closes at midnight tonight.⁣
⁣
Comment CARBS, and I’ll send you the details!💜⁣
⁣
We kick off tomorrow, Saturday, September 12, and our first official day together is Monday, September 14.⁣
⁣
If you have been saying that you need to “get your crap together,” you are probably not looking for another list of foods you cannot eat.⁣
⁣
You already know how to start a diet.⁣
⁣
You know how to remove bread, swear off sugar, download another meal plan, and promise yourself that this time you will stick with it.⁣
⁣
The harder part comes when life happens.⁣
⁣
Dinner runs late.⁣
⁣
Someone brings treats to work.⁣
⁣
Your family orders pizza.⁣
⁣
You eat something you did not plan, feel guilty, and decide you will try again Monday.⁣
⁣
That is the cycle we are beginning to change.⁣
⁣
Inside Weight Loss After 40, Carbs Included, I will help you practice balanced meals, find portions that support your health and weight-loss goals, and include carbohydrates without treating them like a threat.⁣
⁣
You will learn how protein, carbohydrates, and fat work together so your choices are based on what supports your body instead of another stranger’s rules on social media.⁣
⁣
We are planning for the day that gets busy, the meal that is imperfect, and the moment when you would usually say, “Forget it, I’ll start again tomorrow.”⁣
⁣
For 21 days, you will have my guidance, daily accountability, and a small group of women who understand what it feels like to be tired of thinking about food all the time and want to scream at the scale. ⁣
⁣
You do not have to complete these 21 days perfectly.⁣
⁣
You are here to practice making the next supportive choice without turning one decision into another lost week.⁣
⁣
That is how you begin building a way of eating you can continue.⁣
⁣
You do not have to choose between eating carbs and losing weight. You can learn how to eat them with confidence instead of guilt.⁣
⁣
Enrollment closes at midnight tonight.⁣
⁣
Comment CARBS, and I’ll send you the details. 💜
I want you to finally start feeling better! It’s your turn to take care of you💜
