As serious illness progresses, swallowing medications may become increasingly difficult.
For families, this can be concerning—especially when medications are needed to manage pain, anxiety, or other uncomfortable symptoms.
The good news? Hospice has options.
Your hospice team may recommend:
✔ Liquid medications — Some medications are available in liquid formulations that may be easier to administer.
✔ Concentrated medications — Certain medications can be given in small volumes when appropriate.
✔ Alternative routes — Depending on the medication, options may include patches, suppositories, or other prescribed methods.
✔ Medication adjustments — Your hospice provider may simplify the medication regimen or discontinue medications that no longer contribute to comfort.
✔ Individualized symptom management — Your nurse can assess swallowing difficulties and coordinate appropriate medication changes.
Important reminders for caregivers:
• Never crush or dissolve medications without checking with your hospice nurse or pharmacist.
• Do not force medications, food, or liquids if your loved one is having difficulty swallowing.
• Notify your hospice team promptly if your loved one is coughing, choking, holding medications in their mouth, or becoming unable to swallow.
Difficulty swallowing doesn't mean your loved one has to experience uncontrolled symptoms.
Hospice care adapts to changing needs, helping patients remain as comfortable as possible throughout their journey.
The way we provide care may change. Our commitment to comfort never does.
