When I’m reviewing a child’s health history, one thing I always ask is: How many rounds of antibiotics have they had—especially in their first few years?

Because antibiotics don’t just target the bacteria causing the infection. They can also disrupt beneficial bacteria in the gut.

And those early years are when your child’s microbiome is still developing.

Research has linked early antibiotic exposure with higher rates of conditions like asthma, eczema, and allergies. That doesn’t prove antibiotics caused them, but it gives us a reason to be thoughtful about how we use them.
Antibiotics absolutely have a place. Sometimes they’re essential.

But the conversation shouldn’t end with, ‘Finish the prescription.’

We should also be talking about supporting your child’s gut afterward—and making sure the next antibiotic is actually needed.

In our office, that antibiotic history is one piece of the bigger picture we look at when a child has ongoing symptoms.

Comment ‘GUT’ if you want a follow-up on supporting your child’s microbiome after antibiotics.”

IBS is a BS diagnosis and your doctor is not diving deep enough to find out why.

You leave the appointment with a diagnosis.
You leave with another medication.
But you’re still afraid to eat before leaving the house.

Still bloated by dinner.
Still struggling to poop—or rushing to the bathroom.
Still wondering whether this is just your life now.

“It’s IBS” should START a conversation, not end it.

IBS is real. So is your discomfort. And you deserve more than being told to live with it.

Has anyone explained what might be contributing to YOUR symptoms?

Your food triggers.
Your bowel movement patterns.
Your medications.
A previous gut infection.
The way your gut and brain communicate.
Whether testing for another condition is appropriate.

MiraLAX or Imodium may help you manage constipation or diarrhea. But they are a band-aid and ongoing pain, bloating, and unpredictable bathroom trips deserve a follow-up plan.

A diagnosis should come with an explanation, options, and someone willing to reassess when you aren’t getting better.

In our office, we take time to understand your symptoms and determine whether targeted gut testing could help guide your next steps.

Same spots. Same breakouts. Have you ever wondered why?

Where your acne appears can offer clues to what is going on inside the body at a deeper level.

It gives us a starting point to investigate and to look for more underlying causes, not just more medications.

That’s why the questions we ask matter:

▫️ Do your breakouts follow your menstrual cycle?
▫️ Are you having gas and bloating?
▫️ Do you break down your food appropriately?
▫️ What else changed around the time it began?
▫️ Are you also experiencing digestive symptoms?

The answers help us decide what deserves further evaluation and whether targeted testing is appropriate.

SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT ROUNDS OF ANTIBIOTICS IN A YEAR—AND THE EAR INFECTIONS KEEP COMING BACK.

This is a pattern I’ve seen in kids coming into my office. And it deserves a closer look.

Antibiotics can be necessary. But they also affect beneficial gut bacteria, and repeated courses can cause digestive side effects. Parents deserve a conversation about both the benefits and the tradeoffs.

When infections keep returning, we need to ask:
→ Is there persistent congestion or fluid behind the ears?
→ Are allergies contributing?
→ How is the child sleeping and breathing?
→ Have they developed diarrhea, constipation, or other digestive symptoms?
→ Is their diet providing enough fiber and nutrients?

In our office, we take time to look at that bigger picture. We review their history, diet, digestion, sleep, and allergy symptoms to identify concerns that deserve attention.

Supporting gut health after antibiotics is part of caring for the whole child. It doesn’t guarantee that ear infections will stop—but digestive symptoms shouldn’t be overlooked while we investigate why infections keep returning.

And for some mild ear infections, watchful waiting is an option worth discussing before starting another prescription.

You deserve to understand why an antibiotic is being recommended—and what the plan is if the infections continue.

Save this post for your child’s next visit. If you’re looking for a more thorough look at your child’s health, our office is accepting new patients.

For hundreds of thousands of years, humans evolved under the sun—not under fluorescent lights, LED screens, or inside climate-controlled buildings. Sunlight wasn’t an optional part of life; it was one of the primary environmental signals that shaped our biology.

Long before modern medicine, civilizations around the world recognized the importance of the sun. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Incas, Aztecs, and countless Indigenous cultures honored the sun as the giver of life, energy, warmth, abundance, and healing. While their traditions were rooted in culture and spirituality, they also reflected a timeless truth: without the sun, there is no life.

Today, we’ve become incredibly disconnected from this relationship. We spend the majority of our days indoors, exposed to artificial light while avoiding one of the very things our bodies evolved alongside.

Sunlight is more than just vitamin D.

It helps regulate our circadian rhythm—our internal clock that influences sleep, energy, metabolism, hormone production, and countless biological processes. Morning sunlight helps tell the brain, “It’s daytime,” supporting more restful sleep later that night.

Sunlight also stimulates vitamin D production, an essential nutrient involved in bone health, immune function, muscle function, and many other physiological processes. Exposure to natural daylight has also been linked with improved mood, greater daytime alertness, and overall well-being.

The goal isn’t endless sun exposure.

The goal is balance.

Nature rarely asks us to choose extremes. It invites us to build a relationship based on awareness, consistency, and respect.

The conversation shouldn’t be “avoid the sun.”

It should be “learn how to work with it.”

When we reconnect with nature’s rhythms, we often reconnect with parts of our health that modern life has pulled us away from.

The sun isn’t something to fear. It’s something to respect
