When calorie counting haunts you beyond Halloween 👻

Calorie counting can *feel* like a way to simplify eating & nutrition, but when it’s the ONLY way you feel comfortable eating, it becomes a problem, right?! So if you can’t seem to turn off your brain, what can you do?

Here are a few tips 👇🏼

🍂 Re-orient to the present. Think sight, smell, sound, taste. Anything that helps you get out of your head.

🤭 Eat without looking up nutrition information - don’t understand how helpful space from labels & measuring can be!

🛒 Buy brands that you don’t automatically know the calories of.

🫶 Challenge the belief that you need to know the numbers to make a good decision with food - give yourself & your intuition credit!

🧐 Get curious about what the calorie-counting part is trying to do for you. How is this part trying to help you? What is the best possible outcome?

Claire, we appreciate your enthusiasm, but we’ve got it from here. 👻

If you can relate to this video, the most important thing you can read is that you are not broken. You are not crazy. And all that’s happening in your head makes sense. 🫶

A lot of times, the reason eating feels so complicated is because different pieces of who we are hold different thoughts, experiences, and opinions about how things should work.

Parts of us internalize subtle / loud, unspoken / spoken rules of eating and having a body. And this makes so much sense given how much noise there is on those topics in the world today. This is one reason why, for example, you may feel so guilty for eating something even when *logically* you know it’s completely fine to do so.

Rather than trying to fight, silence, or get rid of these parts of us, we work on understanding them with curiosity and compassion, while helping them step back enough for healthy “self” to lead.

These parts also need containment, a new perspective, & permission not to work so hard. This takes both time and repair between parts and within your system. A felt sense of safety within yourself and your the external world as well.

The internal calorie counter, the immense food guilt, the part of you that never thinks any of it’s good enough — these parts are not all of you. 🫶

Your Self (think: your intuitive, grounded, healthy connected self) is still there. Even when it feels hard to access.

Over the next few weeks, we’re introducing you to some of the most common parts we see show up around food, movement, and body image in our practice.

Calorie Counter Claire, Food Police Franny, Guilty Gabby… etc.

Our hope is that those who experience this feel less alone & also see an opportunity to connect with / strengthen healthy self as an avenue for growth / change / healing.

xx,
The Emilys 😉

Happy OCD Awareness Month 🎃

Eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are NOT the same thing *and* they can overlap in ways that make recovery feel especially complicated. We see this a lot in our practice!!

Research suggests that about 1 in 6 people with an eating disorder also experience OCD. (PubMed)

Both can involve rigid rules, perfectionism, repetitive behaviors, and an intense need for certainty. And sometimes, it can be difficult to untangle where eating disorder behaviors end and OCD compulsions begin. Sometimes it’s ED rooted, sometimes it’s OCD rooted, and sometimes it’s both! # #

This might look like:
⭐️ Repeatedly checking hunger and fullness cues
⭐️ Needing a meal to look or feel “just right”
⭐️ Avoiding or neglecting self-nourishment due to contamination fears
⭐️ Difficulty eating food someone else has prepared

So, what does nutrition treatment look like when ED and OCD overlap?

It means more than just working on food flexibility, but rather, activity targeting safety bx that are getting in the way of nourishment by increasing capacity to (1) return to present and (2) not abandon self when intrusive thoughts arrive - whether that be ED, OCD, or both. Therapeutic meal support is one service that is participle helpful for this

The goal isn’t to eliminate every uncomfortable thought before you eat or to convince yourself that it’s all really “okay”. It’s to help you nourish yourself without needing the anxiety, guilt, or uncertainty to disappear first.

And importantly, treating one doesn’t automatically resolve the other. A coordinated treatment approach with an ED/OCD-specific therapist is super important — much love to all amazing therapists we’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with!!!

You deserve support that understands the whole picture. 💛

Brave, brave, brave 🧡

To even CONSIDER so so brave 🥹

These parts will catch up, they need time to see it’s safe to take on a different role 🫶🏼 you get to show them that nourishment is safe

This is at the heart of our practice 🫶🏼 slow is fast in ED recovery!!! Integration > white knuckling

Diet culture doesn’t get to own all the foods. Just because you used a food in your Ed doesn’t mean you necessarily can never eat it again (unless that’s truly what you want). Letting go of “shoulds” and embracing - what do I really want?

This takes true discipline!!!

This can feel so lonely. You are seen in this and not alone 🫶🏼

Your body is not the problem 🥹

If any of this resonated, we would love to help relationship with food and body feel less fragmented & more aligned with who you are & who you want to be.

Food can be a beautiful vehicle that helps you live more connected life. This can feel far from reach when it’s been used asa tool for shame management, self-punishment, and disconnection.

Healing requires re-orienting to what you really want - presence, adventure, connection, aliveness, agency, grace, grit, growth, strength, flexibility, attunement, settling, confidence, peace ✨

Getting curious about what’s getting in the way, & taking the next tiny courageous step 🫶🏼
