Richard Williams was a roofer by trade but a musician at heart. After a fall on the job broke his back, five major surgeries and a long, painful recovery took a toll on him physically and emotionally. When doctors recommended another surgery, Richard wasn’t sure he could face the pain and isolation again.

Then a rehabilitation instructor suggested EverTrue PACE. Richard wasn’t sure what to expect, but he soon found something he had been missing: a sense of belonging.

"When I got here, that’s when I found out that I didn’t have to give up on people," he said. "It made me feel like I was welcome. Like a family here."

With support from the team at EverTrue PACE, Richard became more active and connected and found his way back to writing poetry and songs.

What’s the best age to move into Independent Living? It’s not 65, 70, 75 or any other single number. The right time looks different for everyone.

For some, it’s when home maintenance starts taking more time and energy than it’s worth. For others, it’s the desire for more connection, new experiences or simply more freedom to spend each day the way they want. And sometimes, the right time is before a move feels necessary, when you have more time and flexibility to consider what you want for your future.

Here are SIX key factors to consider for deciding when Independent Living may be right for you.

At EverTrue, Independent Living means more freedom to shape what comes next and live Life According to You. 🩵

Caring for someone you love can be rewarding, but it can also bring challenges that are difficult to navigate alone. EverTrue wants you to remember that you are not alone on the caregiving journey.

We recently hosted our first "Caring for the Caregiver" event, bringing caregivers together with EverTrue licensed social workers for conversation, practical information and connections to helpful resources.

Together, attendees explored ways to build a support network, recognize signs of caregiver stress and burnout, develop healthy coping skills and find services such as respite care. Just as important, the event reinforced a simple truth: caring for yourself matters too. 🩵

We look forward to hosting more opportunities to support older adults and the family members, friends and caregivers who are there for them every day.

When longtime St. Louisan, Ann Corrigan, moved to EverTrue Tower Grove 11 years ago, she found what she was looking for — and so much more! Ann wanted place where she could stay connected to St. Louis and remain independent as an older adult. Along the way, she became part of a community where neighbors care about one another and friendships grow.

"I have a lot of friends here, new and old. I love being involved, learning about people and sharing their stories. I’m from St. Louis, and I want to stay in St. Louis. This community lets me do that while remaining independent."

🦇 As Halloween approaches, we think the only thing scary about senior living is how many myths are out there. 🕷️

For example, many people worry it will be difficult to make friends in a new community. In fact, most older adults residing in a life plan community report improved social wellness, according to a recent study by the Mather Institute on Aging.

EverTrue communities offer frequent activities and diverse opportunities for social engagement between neighbors — in addition to the many clubs and interest groups residents can join or start.

Chuck, a Navy veteran, joined the EverTrue Meramec Bluffs veterans' organization when he became a resident and made many friends who had similar experiences. It contributes to his community feeling like home.

What an incredible evening!

Last month, supporters gathered for the EverTrue Ageless Gala and helped raise more than $330,000 to support programs and services that help older adults live life to the fullest.

We were also honored to recognize our 2026 Ageless Remarkable awardees: Dr. James and Donna Knight, Dale A. Meyer, Dr. Karl Wilson, Kathie and Richard Winter, and Evelyn Brandt Thomas. Their contributions continue to strengthen the communities we serve.

There’s nothing better in the summer than having a cookout. Whether you’re the grill master or you bring a dish to a potluck, these gatherings are a great way to enjoy time with loved ones and stay active.

EverTrue executive chefs know that eating the right foods — foods that support brain and heart health — are the key to making your summer of cookouts fun and healthy. Be sure to include fruits and vegetables on the menu, have some lean protein options and crank up the flavor (but not the calories) with tasty marinades instead of sauces. Try out this recipe for Grilled Alaskan "Slammin' Salmon" from Executive Chef Mark Shoopman (of EverTrue Lutheran Hillside Village): https://ow.ly/yeiB50ZoBXQ

What are your favorite foods at a cookout?

With the help of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, EverTrue Hospice created a Memorable Moment for our patient, Pam, who loves the arts. Pam and her family met with Assistant Conductor Samuel Hollister after attending Flow in Concert. Pam, who had been an SLSO subscriber for years, told EverTrue how important the arts are to her and that she wanted her legacy to be that her children and grandchildren would have a love for the symphony and understand the importance of the arts as well.

Many older adults want to downsize but they find the process intimidating — and getting started can be overwhelming. Experts at EverTrue have tips for people to help make downsizing easier, including start small (resist the temptation to downsize your whole house at once), make a schedule, and use the “three-sticker” system to label items to keep, to donate and to toss. 📦🚚

Summer is a great time to get out and enjoy outdoor activities, but it’s important to remember that too much heat and too much sun is not safe for anyone.

Jha Mitchell, an RN and Director of Nursing at EverTrue Mason Pointe, said that it is important to even monitor yourself when coming back inside because "sometimes you don't get the effects of overheating until much later and you think everything's okay."

Older adults can have fun safely this summer by remembering a few tips:
🫗Stay hydrated
☀️Wear (and reapply) sunscreen
🧢Dress appropriately for the weather
⏲️Limit outdoor activities when temperatures are hottest and,
❄️Finally, when you’re starting to feel too hot, cool off somewhere with air conditioning.

It’s Juneteenth — the day we commemorate the abolition of slavery in the United States. Also known as Emancipation Day and Freedom Day, it celebrates freedom for all and honors the perseverance of African Americans, as well as the ongoing journey toward racial equality.

As a faith-based organization, we recall the words of Paul, “For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1)

May we embrace those words and remain ever true to the call for freedom and justice.
