Use “Would You Rather?” questions to practice choice-making and start low-pressure conversations.

Would you rather:

🎨 Have art or music class?
📖 Read a book or play a game?
🍎 Pack an apple or crackers?
🚌 Ride a bus or walk to school?
🧩 Work alone or with a partner?
🎧 Have quiet time or movement time?

Answers can be spoken, signed, selected from pictures, or communicated with eye gaze or a device.

Try it during breakfast, in the car, or after school!

Progress may look like:

⭐ Entering a new classroom
⭐ Trying part of a new routine
⭐ Asking for help
⭐ Using a communication tool
⭐ Taking a break before becoming overwhelmed
⭐ Recovering after a difficult moment
⭐ Trying again the next day

Not every achievement comes with a certificate. Sometimes the most meaningful progress is visible only to the people who understand how much effort it took.

Some students hold it together throughout the school day and release their emotions once they feel safe at home.

Before adding questions, homework, or appointments, try an after-school reset:

🥤 Offer water and a snack
🔇 Reduce noise and conversation
🛋️ Provide quiet time
🤸 Offer movement or sensory play
💙 Reconnect without demanding a response

A difficult afternoon does not necessarily mean the school day went badly. It may mean the individual needs time and support to recover.

Preparing a school snack is a practical way to build daily living skills.

Offer two or three choices, then practice:

🍎 Selecting a snack
🧼 Washing hands
🥄 Measuring or portioning
📦 Placing it in a container
🎒 Packing it in the school bag

Adapt each step to the individual’s abilities and dietary needs. Hand-over-hand support, picture instructions, adaptive utensils, and pre-portioned ingredients can all make participation easier.

Small responsibilities can build real confidence.

Knowing what comes next can make a busy day feel more manageable.

Create a visual schedule using photos, drawings, symbols, or written words:

1️⃣ Wake up
2️⃣ Get dressed
3️⃣ Eat breakfast
4️⃣ Pack the backpack
5️⃣ Travel to school
6️⃣ Return home
7️⃣ Relax

Invite the individual to remove, check off, or turn over each step as it is completed.

Keep the schedule simple and include a symbol for unexpected changes.

The beginning of the school year is a good time to confirm that everyone has current information.

Check that the support team knows:

📋 Current goals and accommodations
💊 Medical and medication needs
💬 Preferred communication methods
🧠 Behavioral and sensory supports
🚌 Transportation arrangements
☎️ Who to contact with questions

Clear communication between families, care managers, educators, and providers helps create more consistent support.

“How was school?” can be a difficult question to answer. Try offering more specific prompts:

😊 What made you smile?
🔊 Was anything too loud or busy?
🤝 Who helped you today?
⭐ What was your favorite activity?
💭 What would make tomorrow easier?

Answers can be shared through speech, gestures, pictures, writing, or a communication device.

Communication doesn’t have to look one particular way to be meaningful.

Turn school preparation into a simple game!

Ask your child or loved one to find:

☐ A notebook
☐ Two pencils
☐ A water bottle
☐ A snack
☐ A communication or sensory tool
☐ One item that makes school feel easier

Offer pictures or one-step directions if needed. The activity can help build familiarity, choice-making, organization, and independence.

Adapt it to the individual’s abilities—and celebrate participation, not speed.
