💔Nothing can prepare you for the moment your child is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition, or for the words, “You’ll be spending the next 3-4 days in the ICU”- ON CHRISTMAS EVE 😢
Nothing can prepare you to learn that your child was potentially only hours away from being taken from you permanently.- Thank GOD we didn’t let him Sleep it off and took him to ER The whole time Thinking he had a bad case of the flu and just needed fluids b/c he was dehydrated. Boy we were wrong. But GOD is good and had his hands on Dante for us
💙This NOVEMBER is Diabetes Awareness Month, in addition to raising awareness about Type 1 Diabetes….I am taking a walk down memory lane, shining a light on the moments that forever changed our family
DEC 2024….
🩸When we first realized how sick our son was and heard the words “Type 1 Diabetes,” I was suspended between shock and survival mode. The first thing that I said in the ER was- we don’t have anyone in our family that is a Type one Diabetic- So I don’t understand how this is possible and you must have it wrong. So, I called up my friend, who is a pediatrician, and told her the situation. And unfortunately, she had to tell me that they were correct.. WTF!!! & that was the only beginning. After spending 4 days in the ICU - that is when i realized how fu**ed up this was!!!
Dante was a healthy athlete in high school. He was our son that ate really good, didn’t eat fast food, ate organic and I could go ON and ON!
FACT 1: So guess what…..what you eat has NOTHING to do With getting TYPE 1
FACT 2: The signs were all there and we just didn’t know!! He was Thirsty, going to bathroom all the time, losing weight, fatigued and no energy!!! They call that the 4 T’s- Thirsty, Toilet, Tired, Thinner!!!!
EDUCATE yourself! Don’t think that it won’t happen to you. To be honest i never even thought about TYPE 1. And now..it is a ALWAYS on my mind.
I am far from a helicopter mom, But NOW…i now check his DEXCOM to make sure he is ok while he is sleeping, while at school, while playing baseball….and i could go on and on about the ALARMS that go off.
This is not our full story. It’s only some pieces of it.
But one thing I know is that having diabetes will not define Donte! He will conquer it and be successful in whatever he wants to be. It’s just part of his testimony
LASTLY….
💥Here’s the difficult truth:
Most people who haven’t lived this will scroll past the posts this month. They won’t read the stories or warnings. And many families will still be blindsided by this diagnosis, just as we were.
It’s impossible to grasp how drastically life shifts with T1D until the moment it becomes your life.
