He was 15, and he figured it out on his own. 👅

Years of speech therapy. Avoiding certain foods. Trouble moving his tongue. No one had checked for a tongue tie, so he researched it himself and got evaluated. The doctor who confirmed his tie referred him to us, and we found what often comes with it: a narrow palate.

Here’s why: the tongue’s pressure on the roof of the mouth helps shape the upper jaw from birth. When the tongue is restricted, the palate often doesn’t develop as wide as it should. Therapy alone can’t fix that.

He shouldn’t have had to be the one to connect the dots.

💡 If your child is in speech therapy, ask about a tongue-tie evaluation and whether a palatal expander could help.

Follow along for more on how orthodontics can support your child’s speech, breathing, and growth.

Picky eater? It might not be about picky.

A mom told me her 8-year-old rotated through about 6 foods. He’d been in speech and feeding therapy for years. When I reviewed his records, he had a severely narrow palate and a tongue tie, and nobody had ever mentioned either one.

After expansion and a tongue tie release, things started turning around quickly. If the palate is narrow and the tongue is tied, it’s genuinely hard to move certain foods around the mouth and to make certain sounds. Therapy alone can’t overcome an anatomical limitation like that.

If your child is a picky eater or in speech or feeding therapy, ask for an orthodontic evaluation that checks palate width and tongue mobility. It’s a quick check that can reveal a structural cause.

Grinding your teeth at night isn't just a habit. It can be your body's survival reflex.

When the airway narrows during sleep, the brain pulls the jaw forward to open the throat so you can breathe. That's the grinding.

I've seen what it looks like when it goes unaddressed: a 5-year-old with teeth ground down to nubs, a 7-year-old with the same wear plus a crossbite, and an 8-year-old with the same pattern. Three kids, one story.

Worn teeth from grinding aren't something to manage. They're a sign to look at the airway, and early intervention can change a child's entire developmental path.

Seeing wear on your child's teeth? Call for a consultation today!
